Idle adjustment knob on dash

On a 83 240D My Idle adjustment knob is loose, and doesn't seem to change the idle when I turn it. I've never seen how it works really. could someone enlighten me please.

I'm pretty sure it's a bowden cable with an adjustment at the linkage end under the hood.

That's what I thought, but I was wrong.
Anyone know for sure?

Well, lets go a little further on this. I have that idle adjustment thing on my 240D, which is becoming a 300D. I hope to be able to hook it up to the 617 engine. Anybody else done that?

Don't move on, install a cable. Never done it but looks like a fairly easy DIY.

Had one on the 617s in my 79SD and my 85 409d.

Here's a picture of the throttle gubbins at the engine end

You can see the fast idle cable on the left of the picture just under the vacuum lines...

Reply if you need a picture of the cable and bits at the dash end - I've probably got one somewhere.

I do not use the dash knob to adjust, but instead adjusted the ip so it will idle right to begin with.

Junqueyardjim, is your 617 out of the car right now? 617a do not need the idle cable, or an idle adjust most likely. Not sure on 617.

For cars that have the idle knob, here are the basic instructions. There is an internal idle adjustment in the ip. turning this clockwise 1/4 to 1/2 turn then turning the outside adjustment counterclockwise gets a more stable idle. This is an abriviated instructions.

My 617 does idle very well. No problem with that. Where I have a problem is on the occassional very cold morning in Indiana. Less then 20 degrees, and I like to warm the car up and get the windows defrosted. But when it gets colder then 20, I do have a little difficulty keeping it running for up to 3 to 5 minutes. Runs good, but it wants to die at idle.

The cable is listed in Fastlane, along with a new knob and the end piece that secures it to the engine.

on my 80 240, I turn it to the left, and it increases the idle maybe 200 rpm`s. helps when it is cold.

My 617 300D has an idle adjustment knob. It was disconnected when I got the car but I reconnected it.

Honestly, I never use it.

I use mine on my 81 240d also especially when its cold outside.
So , how do i remove the remains of the defiled adjuster?
does the knob just pull off and the bezel unscrew or ?????
I'm working a lot of hours until layoff and don't have a lot of time to screw around with this, so any help is very much appreciated.

Here's a picture at the dash end

Nice and simple - famous last words it should be!

Pull off the knob

Get a flat blade screw driver if you don't have a nice 2 pronged security type socket and gently knock the lock ring loose.

If I remember correctly the rest of it will come off in your hands.
