Another idea Army,
a thin open ended wrench may slide in there, then hold it close to the slot with an adjustable.

A small piece of plow disk or the hard edge of a plow blade would also work.

Thank you all very much for the suggestions - yesterday was a bad hair day - it started off with a puncture on the bakfiets (direct translation from Dutch => box bike) which meant I had to walk the children to school in the rain... I then struggled with the puncture the whole morning... pathetic!

So a stubborn fastener was more than a match for my bad mood. After lots of (non alcoholic) beer and chocolate last night I'm refreshed and ready to get my ducks lined up!

Sucess!

Done it - I got some help from #1 son (5 years old) and we got it out!

The trick was to first remove as much corrosion and crud from the edge of the screw head.

I ended up taking off small amounts of metal - not that you'll see it though.

I'm glad I didn't get too rough with this bit - it looks expensive:-

A little late, but for reassembly, do a search for a dzus screwdriver.

http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=all&item_ID=6361&group_ID=688&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog

Shown is a Snap-on brand, but there are others.

We used to use the "snoopy" tool to seal fasteners on the travel pods on planes. The tool looks sort of like Snoopy's head.

I'll stage a photograph tomorrow - it was just a bit of soft steel flat in the end clamped to a table and #1 son on the end of an adjustable positioned as close to the nut as possible whilst #1 dad simply twisted the whole tail cone section and it came undone.

I think the key to success was probably to do with the scraping away of the corrosion around the nut.

I can't believe I've forgotten about dzus fasteners - I used to work on aircraft - thanks for the tip.

I'm glad to see that you are as familiar with Dr. Seuss as you are with Mercedes.
