I don`t think I mentioned using either type of oil. I did end up with a well lubed boat anchor.

The chain wasn`t worn out. I had it replace at 269K, and it let go at 331K.
why it broke, I have no Idea, but today I would have looked a little closer to the make of chain. should have been a IWIS.

This one did have a short lived life span.

Speaking of Mobil1, I wonder if it has Zinc and Phosphorous, or if I would have to add ZDDP to it. The particular Amsoil I use has high Zinc and Phosphorous for older engines.

There are a lot of Amsoil dealers on this forum. (It's a multilevel pyramid scheme, like Amway or Herbalife.) Asking them if you should use Amsoil is like asking a dog if he's hungry.

My cars get better fuel mileage on amsoil than any other product I've used. I don't care if it is a hexagonal triangle with stair step multiple pay levels.

Did you check the sprockets for wear when you replaced the chain.....a worn sprocket will result in accelerated wear on a new chain.

No the sprockets were not changed. I had a shop replace the chain.

I found out later on from Mike at Metric Motors that they should be replace along with a new chain. as to what was replaced, I`ll have dig through the files.

Even if the sprockets were not replaced, I don`t think the chain should let after 70K.

Sounds like it had a history if infrequent oil changes before you got it.

The sprocket teeth get thinner with wear (to the point the tips actually become sharp and will break off in extreme cases) and because the chain doesn't get the proper support at the points it should when they are worn. That causes the accelerated wear. Its no different than drive chains on motorcycles or industrial equipment with chain drive. Spend enough time around dirt bikes and you learn this lesson.

MLM schemes are probably not illegal, although the skirt the edge of legality. Don't want to get off on a big tangent but you can read more here:

On the internet, there is always someone who is looking to rain on someone else's parade. There are more than a few people who became millionares in Amsoil; they left the corporate grind and retired with a better quality of life than they ever would have had pounding it out at the company store.

I'm sure there were, near the top of the pyramid. That's sort of the point.

The important thing to remember is you never make money at these schemes by selling product. The only way to make any real money at it is to recruit people beneath you. If you're good at that, you might stand a chance. Unfortunately the mathematics of it mean the first person in a particular area usually makes out pretty well, but each new person recruited has a worse and worse chance with it. Most people who join pyramid sales schemes end up disappointed and stuck with a bunch of inventory and literature they had to buy out of their own pocket. YMMV.

Today I went to fuel up and biodiesel was $2 more per gallon than regular diesel, so I said forget it. Associated Petroleum Products has lost my business. I only work part time and I cannot afford to spend nearly $6 per gallon on fuel. One day when there is affordable local biodiesel again, I will purchase it.
