Blower motor not working, 1984 300TD wagon
Ok, I've replaced the brushes without any trouble, but my blower still isn't working. The thermostat is less than a year old and the fuse is new. I never heard any noises or noticed any intermittent operations of the blower before it stopped. I thought about putting a volt meter on the blower plug just to make sure it's still getting a connection, but I can't find it right now. So, while I'm waiting to remember where I put the meter does anyone have ideas on what else I should check?

Run a jumper wire from a 12v source to the blower, this way you are bypassing the system.
Will the squirell cage turn smoothly by hand? could be the bearings are dragging it down. When I got the 240d, the blower would not work. It was hard to turn the cage by hand. so just replaced it with a used one from the JY for $30. Charlie

Yes, the cage turns very smoothly with no noise (even before I oiled it). I can give it a simple twist and it will rotate several times. |

Ice cube relay? Also check that the wiring harness is firmly seated into the ignition. I bumped mine loose once and it lost connection on the power lead for the ACC.

I have plugged, unplugged, and giggled the wiring harness at least a dozen times now and it hasn't done anything. Should I be getting a reading on the voltmeter when I connect it to the plug? I tried that with the ignition and the thermostat both turned on and I didn’t get a reading at all. But I don’t know if that means anything. |

The blower has a voltage dropping array for various speeds. I think it is under the hood. Check for voltages there with the blower switch on. I do not know if it is on the high or low side of the blower motor.
Even more important is to pay attention to the blower fuse connections etc. This circuits fuse holder is famous for being of marginal design for the current it handles. Since the blower stopped working before you changed the brushes it probably has nothing to do with what you have done anyways. Take your meter and check carefully around that fuse holder area. |

I also found some parts right in front of the fuse box that are connected to the wiring harness coming through the firewall (pics #3 & #4). I’m just curious as to what these are if anyone knows. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Looking at my Electrical troubleshooting FSM for 83 - 85, they list the back box as "Electronic unit for blower speed control". the silver box " Electronic unit for temperature control".
Pcture 3/4 The 2 silver Ice cube relays in the black under the hood. one closest to the firewall is " Auxillary fan relay" the one to the front "Compressor relay". Charlie

Did you check the cold engine shut off temp switch located on the thermostat housing? A bad switch will prevent the blower to run.

Are you talking about the fuel shut off valve under the hood, or is this something on the interior thermostat control?

I'm having the same problem. No power to blower. Fuse #8 was blown. Replaced it and still no power to blower. No power to blower resistors. Blower spins off a 9V battery.
I've located the switch on the thermostat housing. How do I test it? Does anyone have good electrical diagrams of the blower system? My manual doesn't show them at all.

reviving this thread - any resolution?
Spruill and Skippy - did you ever resolve your heater problems? I was eagerly awaiting a conclusion, but the thread seems to have died.
I am trying to fix the heater on my '84 300TD and am not sure where to start. The blower motor works when connected directly to 12v but none of the heater buttons seem to do anything. Fuse #8 is good, receiving 12v on both sides. I'm lacking a basic understanding of the components involved in the heater system and how they interact, and my Haynes manual is useless (considering buying the FSM). Did you ever locate the problem? I'd really appreciate any insight - what you found, what you fixed, what you would do/check next in my case. Thanks! |
