Removing 240D Head

Well about 3 months ago I broke my oil pan and replaced it and the car hasnt been the same since. After 2 months of trying to fix it I finally got it to run but it still had problems and sounded horrible.
Anyways I'm going to remove the head and check for anything obvious.

Is there any DIY for this project? I have all the bolts off for the camshaft and cam towers right now. I removed the thermostat housing and removed the tensioner. Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Damage from oil starvation is unlikely to be cheap to fix. If I read you post correctly perhaps starting to look around for a good used engine might be time better spent.

Thats if you are totally sure the engine ran on after the oil supply was gone. Plus restoring the oil supply afterwards left you with issues.

Running with no oil is almost certain death or can be really expensive to rectify if damage is done. You might pull the lower oil pan and remove the first rods bearing cap to see what the condition of the bearing and crank looks like before moving on.

Like most things in life there are exceptions. How long did the engine run with no oil in your opinion? Did it tighten up and stop or what. These things are important in knowing what to look for. Clanking or knocking noises now?How is it running differently after the event versus before the event?

If you had the engine out to change the whole oil pan perhaps something was done during the process that is irrelavant to the no oil issue. Again how is the engine actually running differently than it did?

It ran for about 5 seconds without oil and I was on the highway.
I didnt remove the whole engine to replace the oil pan.
After replacing the oil pan it felt like the car had no power when driving it and it would shut off when coming to a stop. The start up was rill rough and it just sounded like knocking at idle. Before the oil pan busted I never had a problem with the car at all it was my daily. I may just get a donor car and swap motors.

Did the oil pump get damaged? Or any chunks of oil pan stuck on the pickup screen.

The car is old so I imagine you did not have complete insurance coverage. If by some chance you did. Hitting something and damaging the engine as a result is an insurable claim.

Your ideal of buying a junker with a good engine can be cost effective. You can reduce the cost by selling the remainder of the unit for salvage. Or sell some additional items on it to others.

A spun bearing might easily exibit these symptoms.

I've never rebuilt a motor before but I feel like I could get the job done if I had some help or good resources. I have done other big projects just never rebuilt a motor. I plan on keeping the car for a long time so It will be a good investment.

I'm located in Dallas,Tx

oh, I have no doubt you could rebuild the motor, but the parts alone for the rebuild, assuming the crank is not damaged, and it does not need rods or a cam... likely in the 3000.00 range... the 240 is a non turbo motor, but the cylinders require either oversized pistons, or replacement liners installed by a machine shop and milled to the deck height, and bored and honed to the size of the pistons...
