So this morning, needed to be somewhere 8am, jumped in, fired the car up, and backed out, ripping the block heater cord off.

Especially ironic as I've been nagging the wife endlessly about not doing that with her car, and of course I'm the one to do it.

I want to rig something up so that if the same thing might happen, its a bit more robust and the cord just pulls out of the plug, not the wires break. Next project to begin

Came too close, so now what I do since she is in the garage, is leave the hood fully up. Another way be to put a sticky note on the windshield. Eventually you might learn to have a start up procedure.

couple developments. All was welll until the driver front spring decided it would look better if it lost a few pounds during the night-

I came out to get a nice breakfast with the wife, and the car looked like this-

Installed new front springs, and now I have a different issue.

rear springs on order, hopefully that will help level the car out. The ride has greatly improved though.

You didn't take the moving stickers off the wheels

Where did you end up getting new springs from?

I see this thread you compared the height of the spring.
Front COIL Spring Snapped 1983 240D

Not seeing the final stance yet and just looking at your spring comparison, I imagined you were going to end up looking like that because the height is so different. Mercedes typically have 2 different heights on their springs, there is a possibility that you received the taller of the two.

Also, did you compare the wire diameter between the new and old springs? Are they the same thickness?

Hopefully, new rear springs will fix that issue. If not, I notice you have a 3 burl/nub spring pad in there.

Maybe a 1 burl spring pad will bring it down further.

I can tell you honestly that it was a sufficient PITA getting those springs in there that those triple nubbin pads are in for the duration. Hell no am I going through that again on this car. If I were to cut the coils, it would be much easier, but I kinda like the huge ground clearance I have now for half the car

I have triple nubbin pads for the rear too. If that doesn't work combined with a new spring, ill start thinking about spacers, the rears are so much easier to change.

The spring diameter was the same new and old, just about 14mm thick.

The original spring was way easier to compress however, and it also compressed in an alarming way, not in a regular even spaced way until fully compressed. Some of the coils compressed a lot faster than others, I kept waiting for something to fracture

all fixed now, stop laughing at my baby.

so my new rear spring arrived today, and took care of it after work. very pleased!

Work area had almost enough salt for my salt encrusted fish dinner later.

The rear springs were the same lower height compared to the new, about 1.5 inches. could be 300D spec on new ones? or just worn terribly, probably both

glad I got rid of these springs, they had huge flat spots and divots where the spring was wearing on itself

the new spring ready for its protective salt coating- (axle is due to be replaced, don't worry)

difference in ride height, I gained 3.5 inches!

car is nice and high now, very happy with the new ground clearance. feels great driving it, kinda want to do some off roading

nice job!

it will be interesting to see how they settle over time

back in the day, I put a 3.5" spring kit in my jeep YJ + some hockey pucks for trail crawling fun times in W. MA.

air down your tires & go for it

What size tires are you running? They look small.

Stock size. I can go up in size eventually I think, but I've got something like 8 extra tires in stock size to burn through first.

Baby's pretty sensitive.

That is interesting about the higher springs -- I thought that 300D and 240D rear springs were the same?

I've wanted to do some off-roading, too . There was a thread on tercel4wd.com (another one of my dream cars, a 4WD Tercel station wagon -- 5-speed manual + one extra-low gear, unstoppable little wagon) where some guys went off-roading in NY. Their route looked interesting. Where were you thinking of going? Are there places in Western Mass where one could find stuff like this?

Time for some burnout... oh wait, it's a 240D.

BTW, my sister wants to know if your cat's still going at that wall .

For a ride height like that =>

Around here you'd have to put some glittery curtains in the back and start wearing shoes like this

I have a feeling you'll be getting some uneven wear on the outer side of your tyres.

Does it handle like a 1970s American dream boat?
