Easy Job with right filter wrench

Greetings Allan,

Your 300E Gasoline MB takes approx. 6.3 quarts of oil with a filter change and also a 74 MM filter wrench to get it off without removing the air filter housing. If you are using a strap wrench, go to Wal-mart and buy the end of filter wrench. Makes changing this hard to get to inverted oil filter easier. Hope you are replacing the filter with a known brand German or wix filter.

Charles

Allan,

I have a 1988 300E and it has a screw-on type filter that is inverted (the end with the threaded hole goes down), which caused some significant oil leakage when I removed the one the car came with as there was still oil in it that comes out when you loosen the filter. I replaced it with an oil filter from the dealer, which I have been assured by others on this site will drain properly. I am still thinking about poking a hole in the top before I unscrew it just to be sure.

If you have an owner's manual, there is a section in the back that talks about fluid capacities and recommended fluids for the car. My wife is out driving the car now so I do not have access to the manual, but I think 6 or 7 quarts is right.

I bought a wrench for the filter removal from Mercedes when I owned a C230 Kompresor. It had the cartridge type housing that had a black plastic top with molded in hex flats. It was in a slightly awkward location and a regular oil filter wrench would not fit. The same tool fits the 300E screw on filter perfectly and makes taking it off very simple. The same with the installation of the new one, you just thread it down by hand and snug it up with the wrench. The 300E location will likely work with a variety of wrenches.

I use a device to suck the oil out of the dipstick tube rather than drain it from the plug on the pan. Makes it easier to "change it hot and change it often" to quote a famous line from this forum. In all likelihood the plug is a 13mm hex head bolt. Your oil filter kit should have a copper sealing ring in it that goes on the plug when you put it back in.

The filter itself is located at the rear of the engine, on the driver's side. It is upside down as noted earlier, and they apparently come in all sorts of colors. My car came with a yellow one, and the new one is black. You cannot miss the thing, as it sticks up between the valve cover and what ever is outboard on the driver's side at the rear of the engine. Hope this helps, and good luck, Jim

Most of us buy them here

Greetings Allan,

Most of us buy our parts here on this site. Most parts are available through Fastlane. Just click on their logo and go to online catalog, then choose your year, then Mercedes. You can either go through the appropriate related category or simply type in the part search for oil filter. At this point it will probably bring up two manufacturers for that filter, both will be German made and either one will work on your vehicle, some of us just have our preferences though. Click on buy and I'm sure you are familar with the rest. In most cases I place orders for about four filters at a time as well as other consumable items like light bulbs, fuel filter, air filter and the like to keep shipping worth my while.
If you had the guy from Checker find the correct Bosch filter, should be Bosch filter number 72165 then you will only need the filter wrench which I bought from my local Wal-Mart. The wrench is made by vector or maybe someone else at your store, but I tested the fit and the 76 mm type J actually fit the filter end the best, so I'd go with that one. You will also need a metric socket or wrench to remove and replace the oil drain plug. Other than that only oil is the deciding factor for you to decide on. Some use dino oil and others synthetic but we won't debate on either on this post. I wouldn't exceed a 30w as your thickest end of a multigrade though.
It's better to change the oil cold on this engine as the oil filter is inverted and if it hasn't been run for several hours there is no spillage when you remove the oil filter. I would also just tighten the filter an additional 2/3 of a turn once it makes gasket contact.
There is only one oil filter on this car and it sits behind the air cleaner housing. If you happen to find another one please let the rest of us know because we've only been changing out this one. I know it all sounds to simple and it really is on this car as long as you have the correct filter, filter wrench, a socket or wrench for plug removal and new oil to put back in. Run the engine after the oil change to circulate oil into the filter, then let it sit shut off for 20 minutes and recheck oil level and fill to full mark if required.
Hope this helps

Charles

Tell us the tranny symptons

Greetings Allan,

You might as well tell us what the tranny is or isn't doing now so we can have a little time to think it through and respond with good troubleshooting ideas.

ok well might be an easy one for you....
everytime i stop at a light, i hear a huge "thunk" noise from the back of the car. It seems to me that when the transmission shifts down to first gear or second gear when closing in on low speeds, the "thunking" sound is always there no matter what. I believe that its probably the a loose U joint or something but i cant tell, the whole under-chassis is covered with a protective plastic covering that encloses all of the components so i cant really see without really investigating.

you thoughts and answers are greatly appreciated

they will run 100k miles with that thunk . You should at least look around there with the car on a lift/jackstands. Probably not anything to really worry about. My 300D does it and I would not feel uncomfortable driving it accross the country.

I want to respectifically disgree with can-do on the temp to change the oil at. Everything I have read over the past 25 years has indicated getting the engine up to running temp right before you pull that oil drain plug. Helps get all the stuff that ain't supposed to be in there out.
