Front side of the pump, on the lower portion. It is difficult to read with the pump on the car, and may be hidden behind years of dirt/grease/crud that must be cleaned off first.

Dave, the info you seek is in this thread... you'll need to read quite a bit:

I put in an updated pump around 180,000 miles, but I think the old pump fell apart around 130-140k.
Wow! So you were driving around with all those little balls in the oil pan for over 50 k!! Nothing happened? No big bang, rattle or something?

foreign objects in oil pan are not a big deal, so long as they are larger than the holes in the pickup screen, and so long as there's not enough of them to restrict flow into the pump. i once found a complete mouse skeleton in vw beetle engine, looked to have been in there for years. car ran fine.

don't be penny wise and dollar foolish. a new pump is a few hundred bucks. a new engine is a few thousand, plus the inconvenience of suddenly having no car and a massive repair bill.

which one of these is the more affordable option? with 270k on the odo, you *will* be selecting one of these in the near future....

Failure seems to be random, I wonder if it has to do with how hard the pump is worked....like a lot of braking/city driving or vacuum usage/leaks vs. all freeway with a non-leaking system. My 601 has 232k and the pump I removed "seems" to be in perfect shape....but who knows...it was an original from '84. I much prefer having the new one with closed bearings installed!

I think I'd be replacing it soon unless you like taking chances.

I swapped mine out at around 230k. The plastic bearing cage was still in one piece, but you just cannot chance it with these engines.
