oil pump chain broke on 86 300sdl ???? how to replace it ???
the chain on the oil pump of my 86 300 sdl broke 30 seconds after i started it in my garage one morning ...... and i'll be damned if i can figure out how to replace .... and YES i did try to search for it but cant seem to find any how or dyi notes on it .....it was running so nicely i decided to replace some minor things like hoses & belts and when i started it up this awful noise ...rattle rattle bang ... i shut it off and removed to oil pan inspection plate to find parts of the chain AND the chain laying in the btm .... i removed all the stuff i could off the front of the engine ( since i already had most of it off to change the water pump etc. ) assuming there was a cover lurking there but found nothing .... ![]() i dont see any plate or cover you can remove to get @ the oil pump & timing chain .... how the heck do you access it ...... i sure hope i'm wrong becuz it looks like you need to remove the head and everything to get @ it ...... any ideas before i pull the rest of my hair out ... thanks for the help .,... |

It's in there if you read it.
Remove the oil pan and the timing cover, then you can easily do the job. Removing the oil pan and the timing cover is not easy. (I would rather replace a head gasket.)

Do you have the oil pan off yet? It mentions in that link the oil pan has to come off if you are replacing the chain.

The broken chain could be the symptom. I would want to know why it broke.

maybe i'm blind .... as i stated earlier " how to remove the timing chain cover " NOWHERE does it say anything about removing cover .... ..... pls show me where in all that text ( other than talking about what happened and a vague reference to removing the oilpan ) does it say anything about how to remove the timing chain cover ...even if i did remove the oilpan i can't see how it's even physically to put the oilpump chain back on that way .... impossible pls enlighten me ......
it's like saying i removed belt tensioner ...... HOW did u do it ???? |

The oil pump chain snapped while it was doing 75+mph on the freeway. The engine is now a door stop. I will get to it but do not know when. I hope your engine is not damaged when it is starved of oil.
If I read all the posts correctly, I think the oil pan needs to come off to replace the chain. You also need a chain crimper to crimp the master link. Good luck.

You have to remove the hole oil pan, not just the sump. Which is a real pita. But the fun is only beginning!
Then you have to remove the chain tensioner. (The oil pump chain tensioner. You will see it up under there when you get the whole oil pan off. THen you have to remove the sprocket with some screwdrivers. Then I think it's just a couple of long bolts holding it on. I have to say I'd rather have a root canal than have to remove the lower oil pan with the engine in the car!

My OM603 is alive and running.
Quote:
1) Replace all rod and main bearings. I got them from JY. 2) Replace all piston rings but with new oil control rings. Again from JY. 3) Honed cylinder 1 as it was scarred bad. Replace #1 piston. The other cylinders were lightly honed. 4) Polished the crank rod journals. Rod journal #1 was scarred bad and was oval-ished. I shim it by 1/1000" when I bolted the rod back on. 5) All cylinder have compression over 300psi when cold. 6) New oil chain and re-crimp. it is easy to replace once the oil pan is removed. 7) Buttoned everything together and it started right up and running smooth but smoked a lot. 8) Turbo was probably damaged when it lacked oil so I replaced it. The smoking is gone. I learned a lot in the process. It was fun but VERY time consuming. I did it slowly and in between my other commitments so it is OK. The motto is never give up on an engine as the OM603 is very robust, probably same for the OM617. Did 150 miles so far and counting but the jury is still out so to speak. However, I have no reason to doubt the fix.

I have replaced my oil pump in my SDL without removing the chain cover. The tensioner is for the timing chin only, not the oil pump chain.
I only removed the oil pan. Everything is accessible from underneath.
