Dip Stick Tube Gurus -- Help
Howdy,
Got another one which I have never tackled before. Just discovered that my dipstick tube is just floating ... When I pull on the dipstick, the tube comes with it. So, how does one fix this ? Is this a grommet holding it in place ? A mechanical fastener ? Thanks in advance and thanks for all the info. |

IIRC it's press fit, I want to say proper installation has something to be done with the oil pan off-maybe that's removal

Pinch a burr into the bottom lip of the tube(possibly oval it as well), then hammer it back in with a light coating of rtv. The burr wile bite and keep it from popping out. I've done the burr trick on the grease cap of my truck, has help up just fine.

I used RTV on the bottom, and used a zip tie near the top to stablize it. I zip tied it right around the area where the grommet fits on the tube. Before I put on the zip tie, I had about 1 or 2 inches of heater hose split in half and put it around the tube to avoid any metal-on-metal contact from when I tightened it up to the engine with the zip tie.
Crude, but effective. This was in an 84 300D

Make sure the tube goes down all the way in to the oil pan.
Other wise you will get a false reading on the dip stick.

There is a special MB tool, part# 117 589 00 31 00. "Knocking-in tool for oil dipstick guide tube"
Picture FSM " Service Manual Engine 617.95 Turbo Diesel". section 01-310. What ever you use to drive it in, be sure to seat it all the way to the ridge on the tube. the end of the tube sits close to the bottom of the pan. Charlie

I got a good eyeball look at it this afternoon while reinstalling my PS box. I can lift it out easily with my index finger and thumb. Takes about one milli-newton of force. So, nothing to drive in. I think I will try to "flare" the end a hair and use some RTV.
