ALDA question...

OK, If I understand what I'm reading in various posts you would normally want to turn the adjustment screw in (down). On my 85 Coupe, when I did this it resulted in no power. I thought it was a fluke or maybe a bad ALDA. Backing it back out restored the power.

Today, on the 85 Wagon, I had a similar situation, So, I backed the adjustment screw out all the way and the car runs like a raped ape now? Shouldn't it be the other way around? Or was backing the adjustment screw all the way out (up) similar to removing the ALDA?

If you're after more power you need to turn the scew counterclockwise.

I was taught to do so in half-turn increments at a time, then a test drive to assess the change.

Yes, that's also what I see in other posts. Then why does backing the screw all the way out seem to give me the most power?

Backing out the screw IS counterclockwise.
All the way out MAY be like removing the ALDA... I think.

I believe loosening the screw all the way (as mentioned above) does in fact have the same result as removing the ALDA. For the life of me, I can't figure out why anyone would want to remove an ALDA when just adjusting it achieves the same result. The ALDA is a limiter, so backing out the screw limits it LESS. The screw out all the way, or the unit removed completely, makes it at the maxim full rich position.

The ALDA is made from brass that flexes- over time, this material fatigues and can crack, leaving you at the minimum setting. If the ALDA is removed, then you are at the maximum potential from the pump, but not all the time. Driven properly, there will be no adverse affect on the mileage, or excess smoke. In some cases the mileage may increase. Just use your foot wisely.

That is what I was trying to say with: "The screw out all the way, or the unit removed completely, makes it at the maxim full rich position".
"Maximum potential from the pump" is more specific, thanks.

It's crazy the difference backing the screw all the way out did. Course could be the valve adjustment also, but holy! I mean the car pulls now! I was doing 75 and hit the fuel to pass someone (yes it is possible) and the car accelerated like It was going from 20-30, not 75-85... and I was only at half peddle!

I've owned a few of these now and I though a couple of my other ones where quick but this one takes the cake. I'll have to get some video of it later. How else can I explain it, it's like driving a gasser.

Plus to top it off, no smoke. I almost expected to see a strong black trail behind me but nada. Which mean It could go even further with the right tweaks... But, I think I'll just leave it alone and enjoy it as is.

Maximum potential from removing the alda is a bit of a stretch.
