Anti social media = 240D dead

Thursday 10:00 AM.
I went to "Tim Hortons" to meet a young man needing help with a 240D.

He was in his car texting - laughing.

I tapped on the window, and tried to introduce myself.
He opened the window and told me to get a coffee so he could finish.

I grabbed my reading book, got a beverage and relaxed.
My phone went off an hour later, he had forgotten me and driven off.

###########################

Not a big deal for me, rescheduled for 12:30 PM.

I went to "Tim Hortons" to meet him.

He was in his car texting.

I tapped on the window, and tried to introduce myself.
He opened the window and told he would be right in.

I grabbed my laptop, got a beverage went to work.
My phone was going nuts, 20 technical calls in an hour.

Finished the last call, looked out in the parking lot (wait for it) and his car was gone.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

I called him = sorry, voice mail not setup.
Managed to text, asking him to call.
Claimed urgent business and rescheduled for 3:00 PM.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

He is in "Tim Hortons" texting + coffee.
I went in gave an MBCA membership application to one of the employees, walked over and sat down across from him.
After fifteen minutes of being ignored, I got up and walked out.

@@@@@@@@@@

Half hour later I got a call, asking how much longer before I would arrive???
The employees vouched for the fact that I had been there.
I rescheduled for 10:00 PM at a different location.

**********************************

I received a call at 9:30 PM.
The radiator side brackets failed.
The aluminum fan blade ate the radiator, just prior to throwing a blade through the hood.

He tried to make the next exit 2 miles with no cooling system.
His exact words "Something bad happened as I went up the ramp", "it was a sort of deep shivery crunch".
I drove over to look at it.

The harmonic and part of the crankshaft fell off when I tried to put a ratchet on it.

The engine block/upper oil pan is missing a hand size chunk, between the rear of the injection pump and bell housing.

Unfortunately the few phone pictures I took are unusable black, even after processing.

Between texting, he was harassing me for a repair estimate.
I suggested compensation for my time and (50 mile round trip) fuel, causing him to ROFLMAO.

===============================================

Personally I felt abused, and did not give a repair estimate.

I drove away thinking how social media is creating and/or exacerbating rude self centered behavior.

It is likely I would have saved the engine earlier in the day, if he had focused on the car and me for a few minutes.

What a shame. Unfortunately most under 30 are experiencing life only through the screen of a smart phone. This sort of self centered voyeuristic behavior is all this generation knows. We all look back on some of things we did in our younger years & wonder what in the world were we thinking.

This guys lack of respect to you transcends the influence of invasive social media. He'll never "get it."

Karma payback is hell.

Makes one wonder how the fellow was bright enough to pick a 240d in the first place.

I don't even own a smart phone, refuse to pay the ridiculous monthly data plan costs for such a small amout of data. I have a phone that does calling/text/e-mail. And extremely basic web browsing.

Your way to helpful Roy.

I'd have left him on his own after the first sign of rudeness.

Roy, your infinately more patient than I am. If I made a trip to meet someone to help them and upon arrival they didn't stop their phone call or texting to talk with me, then I would immediately been in my car leaving. Pretty much anybody I know in Tennessee would do the same. Maybe you guys just roll differently in Michigan?

Let me revise that - if somehow the guy convinced me to meet him a second time and upon arrival he didn't immediatly put the phone down and address me, there would be a throw down or at least a verbal one unless he wanted more. Man your patient.

He probably inherited it.

As my sainted father would have said, " You know, shooting him in the head would do no good, in his case it's just a flesh wound..."

Some people exist only through the social medium basically. Anti social tendencies can and do seem to develop with the more extreme cases I have noticed. Some seem to almost separate from reality as well.. Everything else becomes really secondary at best to them.

Sometime in the future I suspect treatments will be required for some of them. Roy, you may have just run into a growth component of the future. I do see it as a self inflicted disorder. Parents should watch their kids and attempt to regulate or actually try to stop the trend.

The other thing is it is far too time consuming. It has to be displacing normal interaction and learning and perhaps even common sense to some degree. Awareness of this to me emerging and growing problem may save some members from frustations of some simularity to what Roy experienced.

I had been thinking about the symptamatic behaviours I have been seeing in a young fellow for the last while relating directly to the electronic gadgets. For some they become more of an addiction than is healthy in my opinion.

It's not common but it happens. I don't deal with many younger folks perhaps that's the difference.

Sounds like your average jerk. Every CL meetup, etc. I've been involved in, the other guy is always on the phone...with me, as we try to find each other's car in the parking lot :p

When he gets the dealer/ metric motors price for a new engine he will probably scrap it. Pick that chassis up cheap when he does!

On a side note, time spent with Tim Horton's coffee is time well spent. There aren't any Canadian coffee chains down here, just dumbkin do'hnutz.
