What is it with 300D oil cooler lines?

Easy easy easy - that's what I have to say about OM617 oil cooler lines!

Isn't there service bulletin / WIS information concerning this?

My hearing must be bad, the films sounded close to normal.

But according to your posts, the high copper might be suspicious.

Too bad. I used to have a '79 240D with 136K miles.

Hope you can pin it down after resolving the surrounding issues.

I don't know what it was with me and that job but I was twisted in positions under that car that would make Gumby scream

You'll probably not believe it but I had to google Gumby.

A bit of a update...

I am still waiting on the results of the second oil sample to come back in but I did go ahead and re-adjust the valves and I don't know what I was doing last time but all of the valves were super loose...

I went through and set them all to spec correctly this time and started the car up for about 5 minutes to see how it sounded and this is the result.

4/18 240D - YouTube

The noise from the earlier videos seems to be gone and this video sure sounds like textbook injector nailing to me. I didn't want to drive the car until I get the oil sample back and if its still in the same range as before I will take it for a spin and see how it sounds.

Good update !

What strikes me as odd is that I thought that valves became tighter with use rather than the opposite.

That being so, I wonder why they were loose?

Anyway, I agree that it sounds like nailing. My 300D sounded more chatter nailing-wise at low RPM and it got better at higher RPM.
Replacing all the injectors resolved it.

maybe you have one or two bad ones?

Best I can figure is I must have either gotten the intake and exhaust mixed up or used the valve lash figures for an OM617A. Or maybe an old air cooled VW... Anything is possible I guess.

I can say with some certainty that it was user error since the car has not been more than 1000 miles since the last adjustment. :/

That is nailing.
Call me, when you have a moment, I have several questions.

Well I got the second oil sample back today and the results were very promising. Copper dropped from 19 ppm down to 7. Iron is also much lower this time around however the analysis said that the iron content will fluctuate over the life of the oil however the copper should not.

I'm not sure what to make of this but I did drive the car about 15 miles round trip to dinner tonight and the knock is gone after I adjusted the valves and the nailing went away after the engine was warm. The car drove wonderfully but I almost forgot how slow the car is after driving the 280E

I guess the plan is to just drive it for now and whenever I finally get around to putting a manual transmission in the car I will do a full inspection of the internals of the engine including new timing chain, head gasket, valve stem seals ect.

When I talked to Roy last week he mentioned that some cars had copper in the head gasket. If there was contamination from the head gasket wouldn't there also be signs of coolant in the oil?
