I'm willing to bet huge amounts of money that most of our cars do not reflect anywhere near accurate miles...
My first 123 had a swapped odometer, but it was dated as well as recorded in the owners manual when the swap was done. So I just had to do some calculations to find the actual mileage. My 300D turbo, and my current 300TD have never had a broken odometer in their life and are fully documented. Sold the 240 at 331k, 300D at 263k, and my current wagon has 209k. My 300D by far ran the best of all three. Ran like clockwork. Shouldn't have sold it I guess.

so, your two cars were purchased new? and your TD is not slipping or anything? wow, that's rare for a 123.
if I were you, I'd pull the odometer, and preemptively repair it to prevent any minor/major slips that will alter your perception of total miles...

409,000+ - and still running like a champ!

Regrettably, I recently sold my 84 300D, but it had "only" 242,000 miles on it.

My 1995 E300 (early OM606) has 409,000+. The head gasket was weeping a bit at around 310,000, so the head came off . It's still on the original injectors. (!) The vacuum pump was replaced as a precautionary measure. It's been through a couple of water pumps, and I changed the glow plugs when the head was off, but I consider all of those to be "wear" items.

That car has been AMAZING. Sad note however is that the trans has recently developed a leak from the front pump seal, although it continues to function properly. I've replaced other wear items such as strut mounts, shocks & brakes (obviously). But nothing major has ever FAILED. Well, actually the AC compressor was replaced three years ago, but again - how long can one last, especially in a desert environment? At this point, I really should replace the ball joints just as a safety consideration.

If I were younger and more ambitious, I'd put a turbo 606 (with a purely mechanical pump from a 603) into my car for what I would consider the "ultimate diesel". "Ultimate" being relative to performance, economy, and durability.

I keep thinking about buying a 2005 or 2006 CDI, but as good as those may be, I don't think I'll ever own a car as durable, reliable, and confidence inspiring as my 124.131.

re: high mileage

I just sold my '85 300d w/ about 450k on it. I signed it up with the high mileage award/registry before. I regret selling as I miss the daily abuse it endured. The new owner can't believe how well it still drives. One of our customers has a 126 w/ 617 with well over 830k on it and looks great and drives great...
