As for your slugish statement, I only find that to be the case when the auto selects too high of a gear. In 1st gear its pretty quick off the line. The auto doesn't usually down shift at the optimum points when you've been cruising along and have to slow for some reason and then want to speed back up. The manual would be the better choice if he's shopping.
Admittedly, a TDI can be about a mile away by the time a 190d 2.2 has moved 500 feet. So its not really a fair comparison. My TDI is not even broken in yet and averages about 37 city, 48 hwy. Highest I have done is 54 on a long drive at 60ish mph.

I have a *special* 190d, being that it is a 1984 2.2 OM601 motor + a 1993 auto trans from a M102, + the differential is a 2.85, amazingly, it drives quite well, 0-60 is about 17 seconds if you rev the life out of it. (which I don't).

MPG in my setup is about 28-30 city, and I have seen as high as 36-37 on the highway. The absolute fastest I have ever got it to go was on a slight down hill stretch, pedal to the ground, about 96mph. On flat ground it can brush with 90 after a loooong wait.

Must not be any state highways in your area with a 55 mph speed limit as that's where we run 65.

Very few places to do 55 in Michigan....our state roads are 55 but everyone does 60-65 (at least)....freeways are 70 and everyone does 80-85.

Fine with me, nothing more annoying than the southern states where people trundle along at a dead-on 65mph!

CHP doesn't have the money for real speed enforcement anymore, only local LEOs do that to any large extent on local roads. You practically have to run someone off the road or do triple digit speeds for CHP to take notice. There's only a few high enforcement zones left like bay area bridges and construction zones.

so...
I'm looking into a high mileage (driven, not efficiency...) over 500K on the odo... he wants at least 1K... for an 87turbo model...

I'm going to look it over tomorrow afternoon... I don't think I can get the veggie car running, so I'm looking into other options...
a mildly beat high miles driven 190D turbo mmm now I gotta find a 5 or 6 speed manual for it and have fun...

OK, I looked over the car, and made a deal on it. it's mine.

it's been rode hard and put away wet, but it ROARS with power. it's got tranny issues (shifts through all 4 gears in moments) but from a standstill, I can SMOKE the tires on dry pavement... wow. pulling from 15 or so in 4th it PUSHES me into the seat the entire time... zero smoke, instant start from a stone cold motor with 10 seconds on the glow. (it's only around 70 today... maybe 65ish...)
rear tires are nearly new, fronts are around 10K from needing replacement... brakes squeak when backing up when touched, but the rotors have no grooves or lip... nice.
last 200K no maintenance records, but first 300ish fully detailed, and it was bought from a mercedes service shop, I may be able to get the last 200K records from them.... the current owner claimed to put Rotella 15w40 every 5K while he's owned it... motor purred.... down pipe flex was open... gotta fix that... driver's seat missing a bolt.
I had a grin from ear to ear driving the car... $pricele$$!!

Correct. I have one of the last ones. A late '93.

Newest 190d 2.2 in existence, I'm pretty sure.
