if he uses this for around town service what kind of fuel economy should he expect?
his other truck is a chebby express van 3500 with the 6.1ls1 in there... he gets around 9mpg

this will be better no?

22mpg on the highway is pretty standard I think.

yeah, the only scary part is that it was used to haul... SHIPPING CONTAINERS OF VEGGIES... the 53' containers... this sucker was HEAVILY USED thosed 180K miles...

I'm hoping that it was well maintained, but this low miles on the industrial engine should be just fine.
get the fuel leak settled, and it should be good to go for the next 50K of service work... light a/c tools compared to a shipping container of veggies....

We have three '04 Sprinter 3500's in the fleet and they've been good to us. We've done the high pressure pump fix at least once. Not really a big deal. The glow plug controllers are all bad... they think the current's excessive through one plug. I'm measuring proper voltage and current at all plugs so I let that go. Exhaust has rotted away right behind the cat so we've fabricated our own replacement mufflers. Air intake hoses fail frequently, belt tensioners fail from time to time, and the EGR valves have failed somewhat frequently. But overall they've been good vans for the 300k or so miles they've travelled.

No mention of mileage. Price is good. Look at it.

Our friend has a LWB high-roof cargo version with windows, and when we were in it with him, he showed us that the fuel economy thingie showed 25 MPG -- I suspect that's mostly highway, though.

We get between 18 and 24 but our vans are stop and go, in town transit vans.

FedEx(express) has been using these for a number of years. They have their own mechanics who work on them at each office, you can usually drive around the building & see where the shop is. Some of these trucks are driven 200 miles a day, others 20, but start & stop 100 times a day. Speak to one of the mechanics & see what problems they have had & what years are good or bad.

I got my first look at it yesterday.
zero rust from corrosion, but PLENTY of dings and scratches on each and every panel of the truck. the driver must have hit a few bushes/fences/houses... looks like the truck has never been washed prior to being up for sale. lugs all rusty, new tires, missing ash tray? wires hanging out of the space it should go... trailer brake controller, decent hitch. tall boy van. he's driving it on service calls the rest of the week, and giving it to me to go over it this weekend, so I'll get plenty of pictures, and start asking opinions/instructions

Wonder if it's the oil filter, and not the oil/weight? Has this happened a lot, and what were the temperatures?

I don't see how the 3500 diesel Sprinter could do much less than the mid-upper-teens in your Brother's intended use.

9mpg is a scary number...... Good thing it's Halloween! Heh!

Sounds good. Wonder if there was a laptop tray-set-up for the delivery driving aspect installed where the wires/opening is?

Wow! "24 mpg" would have to be a fluke-fill for a stop-n-go van like that. "18" or so seems a lot more plausible.
