Lets see today, a little bit of wrap up and got the new oil pan in...

First I had to clean out the pine needles out of the oil screen...

Took awhile to get all the crap out of the oil screen, who knows how much ran out with the water/cleaner...

Yep there are also a few seeds in there!

Had to take a picture of the the new control arms! Can barely push the front of the car down now...So nice to have new rubber!

FYI...I really really and again REALLY hate this spray on under coating some previous owner had sprayed on EVERYTHING under the car....

Also checked the valves again, had one tight intake valve...Also filed down all the towers that the studs run through to bolt down the valve cover...They were all worn all crazy from over tightening of the valve cover over all these years...

Thumbs up Suspension Bushings

Thanx ! .

Those old bushings looked like toast .

Do you have to remove the coil springs ? .

I'm sure these are kaput on my Coupe as I hear the occasional clunk sound .

RE : the oil screen : what else was in there ? looks weird .

Nope just leave the shock attached!

The spring only needs to be removed to do the lower control arm bushings. You need a spring compressor for that...I've heard the rear's can be removed with out a compressor, but the fronts can kill you...

That clunk, could also mean your torsion bar/sway bar end has broken off. It is very common as the water/salt gathers there and rusts out the end. Could also be the UCA, I was hearing a squeak from the passenger side before all these, I had just played it off as being oil sprayed onto the suspension from the front main seal. Now I am curious if it was caused by the UCA...

Those pics of the debris is all I could gather, who knows what else fell out during the wash. I believe, totally theory here, that all the debris is from the oil filters as I have read they use raw cotton with all sorts of stuff in it..

What's inside that MANN oil filter? Taking it to bits...

Looks like RTV gunk to me. That's what happens when people use too much and it squeezes out. Globs get into the oil and then stuck at the oil screen if they're big enough or they'll go to the filter. If you're bypassing when it gets sucked up...well...into the bearing it goes.

Well I got my special heater hose from germany today! I had to run out and put it on

Now I just have one last special mb bent heater hose I need two.

The package with the pulley bolts has also been sent. I do hope they are the right ones! I had to wait an extra 2 weeks for that package! They said the part number couldn't be found and they listed another part number but the epc doesn't list that as a replace by...so I am crossing fingers it is the correct bolt...searching the number they used 000000002192 it comes up as a m8 bolt...so I guess will see....really wanting to get him back on the road...I know my left knee is fusing together but I soooo miss driving the stick

I order the hose threw here, part number 1238321194

Nope didn't come with the ring attached, I seen on the epc that originally there was also a ring, lost long ago and as with most of the items on the car that hose was also original.....hints to why I removed it and installed a generic heater hose.

The rubber ring is part number is 1164660882

My pulley bolts arrived! Though I don't know....

As you can see they are both the same length...yippeeee....and they are both grade 8.8 but the new ones are torques and have a larger head....I don't think this will be an issue as I "believe" I have the torque socket and I "think" there is enough room. This may also explain why the epc has a lock washer pictured with the bolts as the head of the new ones are larger to allow the washer to work....luckily those are already here.

It is "suppose" to rain the next three days but now the sun is out....So I had a shower planned...if the weather stays clear I may run out and try to install the pulley....So this way I can pop the cork on the celebration lol

The power steering pump seal also arrived and is also thankfully the correct one now...

Fingers crossed he'll fire up with no more leaks, and a nicer ride! Though I know I am talking about a mercedes here :p

Well yesterday I got the pulley put back on, not a problem on that! Tightened to 25nm...used two torque wrenches to confirm....though I really felt they needed to be tightened more....I held back from the urge!

I also reinstalled n filled the radiator, fan n pulley and other misc parts.....I then went to get the belts out of the trunk....Darn it! I left the fan belt in the trunk of the 78 and my buddy wouldn't be home till 9....So I sat on my hands for the rest of the day...

Today I went out at noon to get him all buttoned up.....so eager to know if all these work would do any good, if I got all the major leaks and if I destroyed the alternator....

Once the belts were back on, battery reconnected...Time for the turn over...popped over, let him warm up, check fluids and did a purge/filter change...Everything looked good! Engine seems stronger too..odd...

Well time for the freeway/highway! Took off with my aggressive driving habits....WOW front end is so much stiffer now! Ride is much more smooth, almost effortless! I am really surprised at how nice he's handling with just the rebuild of the UCA and torsion bar....As well as the driveshaft...

I am happy....though there is still a zillion things that need to be addressed at least I am riding better!

Also there are no leaks!!! No coolant leaks, no more power steering leaks and no front main seal leak! My engine is still clean after the 90mph driving I was doing to break everything in!

Oh and the power steering! WOW just cleaning out the pump to install the new seals, its like night n day! I guess that plugged up screen on the valve was really hindering the pumping ability. I do sadly notice that inch of play more now. I think the oddly worn tires are not helping much too...

But I am so much happier! I wish I had this much money to sink into him every few months, would be amazing to have the quality of a mercedes again!!

I do notice a propeller type sound on the car, doesn't get really loud but I hear it...Not sure if its the fan clutch, transmission, wind noise or what it may be...Very possible it could be a wheel bearing as well...I had the front discs changed a few years ago and I would "think" the garage would have told me about a bad bearing..

Thanks!

I am hoping to get the injectors that were originally in this car sent to you, I have them in the 78 at the moment. I know that one wasn't firing right even though I spent like 400$ on them from a rebuilder on ebay sometime ago, After the car was refound behind the mechanic attempting to part him out, I have no idea if he switched any. I "want" to buy a pop tester and start working on the injectors myself but I kept telling myself just put them in a flat rate box and send them to you....Then these tires popped up....Back burner that idea goes again

Thumbs up Progress Report !

Very good Jason .

Did you use lock washers (if so why typ) and/or locktite ? .

I'm now getting a noise in my left front end and am thinking about doing all the bushings as you did .

I wonder if it's difficult to remove the entire sway bar and install the larger diameter wagon one ? .

Keep up the good work ! .

I did use lock washers....If you look back a few pages I included the part number but the bolt number is wrong...Some odd reason we're not able to edit older posts

On the fsm...It says that the lock washers weren't used after 1979, but I ordered them and thought what the heck? I also didn't use lock tight as the FSM didn't state that nor did the old ones have it on there.

It really would be more time consuming to remove and replace the bar. What I have heard it really isn't worth it...What you would need to do is remove the booster, all hvac stuff and anything else above the bar...you have to be able to lift the bar up in order to work it out of the fender...

Just renewing all the rubber and UCA's really brings back the purpose of the torsion bar. All that rubber just degrades after all these years...

On the non-turbocharged engines, the engine has to be removed to get the sway bar out, seems due to the linkage (tried on the '79).

On the '85, was able to get the bar out by just removing the booster and getting the electrical wires out of the way. But, major pain.

Jason, bet feels good to get all this work done!
