reoccurring fuel leak solved with help of uv led torch

some of you may remember my post a week or so ago about a fuel leak that kept coming back on the lift pump suction hose. recently i bought a uv led light torch on amazon to aid in finding radioactive depression glass while antiquing, and boy does it work well!

today, i got the "bright idea" to put the uv light under the hood to look for ac refer leaks bc i had the mechanic put some dye in the r134a last spring. opened the hood, clicked the light, and holy cow diesel fluources under uv! that may not be news to most of you, but it was to me.

then, i noticed the tops of the delivery valves had the bright green color that was referenced in the clear hoses on the ip and in the prefilter. it looks to me like the delivery valves, mainly 3,4 and 5, are leaking only when the car is run for a while and it's running down the pump to the lowest point, which would be the suspected hose connection at the lift pump.

it's kinda hard to see in the pic, but you can really see it in person. it looks like the blood from the predator movie. guess i will be changing those seals soon.

on a side note, i didn't notice any ac leaks!

That's pretty cool! It helps too that the pump is nice and clean. You must have a OM602 or a Euro OM617 to have that M pump.

Indeed Cool. If you were a Mechanic working in a Shop you would really wow the Customer finding a leak with that light.

2 low tech methods. Starting from top to bottom spray everthing off with Brake Cleaner so it is all dry. Drive the Car what ever amount of time you feel the leak shows up.

Start from the top of the Fuel Injection Pump and wipe your Finger acrossed various areas till you end up with Diesel Fuel on them.

For the Delivery Valve area you can wad up some Paper Towels, Toiliet Papaer or Kleen-ex between the Delivery Valves. If there is a leak there the Paper is going to be wet with Diesel Fuel.

If I wanted to buy a light what would I be looking for.

Adding a florecent tracer dye would really make things easy. I believe tracers are available for all oil, gasoline, diesel, transmission and power stearing fluids. Nice post is that a LED UV portable 3w flashlight?

no need for a uv traser dye!!! diesel glows like liquid kryptonite!!! i don't know if this particular light emits a different uv wavelength than most, or if it's just it's intensity but that pic was taken outside when the sun was out, and in person it is WAY brighter.

WindFire® Wf-502b 1 Mode 395-410nm UV-Ultraviolet Led Blacklight Flashlight 18650 Rechargeable Battery UV Ultraviolet Blacklight Flashlight Torch with Features Money Detector, Leak detector and Cat-Dog-Pet Urine Detector(Battery not included) - - Ama

this is the link to the light. i already had the 18650 batteries and charger, but you can buy all 3 for $20.

i took some pics of a bottle with some diesel in it from when i pop tested my injectors, next to my dead blow which also fluoureces. garage lights were on in both pics.

btw, you can also find dog/cat pee stains you THOUGHT you got out of carpet, or as in my case, ones you didn't know about.

lol jaybob! agreed! i looked at that one, but the one i linked is WAY more powerful. not sure, but it has the same look as a cree xml t6 emitter that i have in my other flashlights, just in normal wavelength.

The ultra fire is coming out of the same Chinese factory I believe. It is a claimed full 3 watt cree uv led. That's is what I have. You can get one delivered to your door freight paid for around seven dollars.

Ebay has tons of models available. The rechargeable battery and charger if you do not already own a 3+volt battery is only a couple of dollars as well with free mailing.

For you guys not chasing pet stains and doing none to very limited air conditioning. I have heard even the cheapest ones although less powerful will do. Although you may want to use in lower light levels in some situations I suspect.

Is that another way of saying ' get into the engine compartment... and have someone close the hood... at night ' ?
