Seems to me that the SBC failure issue all by itself should be a factor in valuing these cars. If the SBC unit has been replaced, that's a real plus. But if it's never been replaced, it's only a matter of time...and starting this year they're going out of warranty. Kind of like a $2000 ticking time bomb....and potentially a good bargaining chip.

This is pretty much balanced out by those of us that want the last of the iron block inline 6, vs the V6 in the models that come after. So i think that in reality, it won't be much of a value factor unless it is actually bad.

Let's say you have two fairly high mileage cars (we'll say 200k miles), identical in all respects, except for the SBC. Both had the recalls done so both SBC's were reprogrammed. But in once case the SBC unit was recently replaced in the other it has not been replaced. To me that translates into a significant value difference. In the first case, my working assumption is that I will never have to replace the SBC unit; in the second case, I assume that I could have to replace it any time.

Also, my guess would be that most sellers are only going to be marginally aware of the issue....in their minds, the brakes work just fine and always have.

It would be interesting to know, when the units were reprogrammed, what the new limit is. Originally I think it was 300,000 pushes of the pedal.

My understanding is that it is a $700 part from the dealer and not all that hard to replace.

This is unlikely to be seen as any different than looking at two cars, and choosing the one that just had new ball joints, tie rods, and tires replaced. you will always choose which represents a better perceived value when looking at all the cars on the market when you are looking to buy. In the last 60 days I was there.... twice. Looking for a new car for the wife, then i looked for one myself as I fell in love with hers.
Mine, I severely limited my choices, as I wanted an early 05 with a butterfly console. Not that a rolltop console would have been a deal killer, but i really like the older one better.

If it's the part I'm thinking of it's 009 431 26 12. List price is $1154 but can be had for $854. But, for most of us (without STAR DAS), the dealer has to install it (or at least someone with equivalent diagnostic equipment).

Assuming you can get a hold of the VMI, then you'll more easily be able to make that assessment on any given 05/06.

Is it my imagination, or are prices continuing to trend downward? I check on the dealer inventory now and again and prices seem like they're going down. Granted, I have no way of knowing the condition of a particular car....but still.

There is now a 3 month running average of asking prices and miles toward the bottom of the sheet.

All is as it should be in the world, with the average prices creeping down and the miles creeping up.

When I started in March, I listed the low priced cars first. By the end of April, I think that I caught up and had listed almost all that I found.
I think that the 3 month running averages will smooth out the effects of $28,000 asking prices and 400,000 mile cars.

March, April, May...$12,264 / 133,755 / 267 cars
April, May, June.....$12,247 / 134,672 / 282 cars
May, June.............$11,814 / 137,119 / 115 cars
June....................$11,641 / 138,993 / 39 cars

SBC work....

Local dealer told me MB will work with an owner who has had maintenance work done on vehicle and the SBC fails. In otherwards, do your brake fluid changes every two years. If the SBC fails, you should be able to get cost subsidized.

Regardless, it is cost of driving these vehicles. You have an Y% chance of having to pay let's say $1500 (Y is probability of failure of SBC unit during first 300k miles). Budget the Y%x$1500 and you will have the money on hand when the issue comes up.

Still think the 05/06 CDIs are great used cars at the current prices here in US.

Seems reasonably priced.

If something interests you, and it seems close to what you want - be prepared to move on it. I had seen the CDI I bought (5) days or so on AutoTrader dot com that I went to see. It was being serviced at that time in the MB dealership before being put out on the lot for sale. I was (1) day earlier than a competitive buyer of my CDI. However the MB dealership already had an interested buyer (me) with a bona fide offer /counter-offer on-the-table that they were pursuing. The CDI I bought had been on-the-lot for 2.5 days when I arrived to view it. The next day, it'd of been gone/under-contract.
