06-06 CDI Glow System: Are Bosch 11.5v plugs ever the correct plugs?
Oops that should be 05-06
For the 05-06 CDI sold in the US, is there EVER a case where the 11.5v Bosch plug is the correct plug? I know mine uses the 5v Beru. And from everything I've read...including comments from Bosch tech support....the 11.5v Bosch plug is the wrong plug...and that they could damage the glow system. On the other hand, there are retailers like AAZ who sell the Bosch plug for the CDI (but they specify to make sure Bosch was the original plug). And there are people out there selling CDIs boasting of "new Bosch glow plugs," presumably installed by an MB indie who knows what he's doing. Can anyone clear up my confusion?

All US market E320 (OM648) CDI's are equipped with Beru's ISS (Instant Start System) which require 5V Beru glow plugs. Only European models came with the 11.5V Bosch system.
The Bosch plugs are not acceptable substitutions or replacements for the Beru plugs, I'm not sure why so many retailers list them. Never assume, always verify with the MB EPC/OEM catalogs before ordering parts. Another example, many parts catalogs will be happy to sell you an INA belt tensioner that fits, but was never used on the W211/OM648 (W210 part since superseded by MB. Litens is the correct OEM). If you're not using OE MB parts, you really have to watch what you (or your independent) is ordering and installing on your car! |

I'd counter that a 11.5 V plug would damage the system and would like to know specifically what is damaged. Higher input voltage = higher resistance and lower current draw.
I do see it throwing a code thinking a plug is burned out / longer pre glow times / no start in cold weather. Also, why wouldn't all cars have the ISS? ( System cost, existing Bosch contract ? ) |

At the time it was new technology and for the reintroduction of diesel passenger cars to the US market, I guess MB wanted to use the system for assured quick and easy starting in all climates! Lower emissions may have also been a consideration. The Beru plugs are able to reach 1000C in under 2 seconds! If anyone wants, I can email copies of the US E320 CDI's preglow system information from the FSM and the ISS brochure (PDF) from Beru. |
