Have you considered a leak-down test to identify if the issue is valves or rings?
I'm sure you know the head and injection pump are worth a bit, and other parts as well if you decide to sell off the parts.

Ah that's what I forgot to mention!
I don't have a leak down tester per say.. It's more of a modified compression tester line that I hook directly onto air and I'll just listen. It's not exactly the most accurate of tests, but if I'm having a serious compression loss, I can definitely hear it. I had quite a bit of air coming out of the crankcase, nothing out of the intake/exhaust. She definitely bent a rod, which is too bad it's not too bad of a ride, just not nice enough for one of my 3.0 blocks.
I'll make a weekend of removing the engine/trans/diff and everything I can fit in a bunch of boxes. The rest of the car will be sent off with the metal scrapers. They'll give me roughly what I paid for the thing which works for me lol
