Installing Air Conditioning in a 240D

I'll keep everyone posted, I tried contacting Iceac.com regarding their system as another option

Learning how to pull the console and the dash and figuring out how this all goes together is best done on a parts car at the junkyard rather than on your own car. The air handler, controls, etc.would probably be 80 to 100 at a pic and pull yard.

Also get all the ac hoses - take them to an ac shop and have all the rubber hoses re-done; they'll use the existing fittings - but think this through if you are going to change compressor type - that will change some of the hoses.

The job looks horrible but it's not that bad and you can keep driving the car while you're working on it - just hook up the instrument cluster and prop it up there. Gives the car Kind of a post- apocalypse styling with the insides exposed like that - pretty hilarious.

With the dash and the air handling equipment out you have an opportunity to add sound deadening in places you'll never be able to reach again.

I'd recommend getting Rollguy's Sanden bracket - around 200 without a compressor; 400 with the compressor (those are old prices could be more nowadays). The Sanden is much more efficient than the GM R4. I stuck with R12 for the refrigerant - lower pressures than R134 and much better cooling.

Reading through this thread is crazy reading about installing an AC system in the trunk to an after market hack job install under the dash.

I was thinking all along from the first post as CFH mentions here, is to find a 240D in the junk yard or buy a parts car 240 and remove the whole ac/Heat unit. You will have to remove the Dash first, then the heater hoses on the Firewall side and the cables to the water valve on the Firewall side.

Save as many of the wires to the unit as you can.

It will be a drop in replacement for the Euro unit. Then it will be all stock looking.

I have pulled 4 or 5 of these units in PNP and really not all that difficult of a job.

I don`t know if your Euro engine has the Boss holes in the lower left side of the block for the R-4 or the Sanden up grade. You will have to check for that.
The other option is to install the York bracket that sits on the top right side of the engine.

There is or was an after market bracket to install a Sanden unit on the York bracket.

The Sanden is more efficient and uses less HP.

There is a Freon called Hot Shot 2 which is R417C a direct replacement for R-12.
Don`t know if it can be sourced in Europe.

daw-two and Dmorrison have some good write ups on R&Ring these units.

If you get a used one out of a 240D, take the box apart and clean the Evaporator and Heat Exchanger, and replace the Flap Door seals.

Brand new evap box would probably be big$ if it is even still available from the dealer. Find the vin off a late 240d and call a dealer to check parts prices.

I'm not a mechanic by trade or anything and most if not all I've learned about wrenching on a w123 I've learned here. I really enjoy working on these cars, so simple and mostly well engineered. This place has made my current hobby possible. Invaluable resource here.

It is really not that bad of a job. I had the whole auto box out and manual one swapped in, dash, coolant hoses, heater valve etc all buttoned up in about 4 hrs.

Did it in the evening over two days after work. No power tools just wrenches and socket set and Philips screw driver. I can get the whole dash out in less than 15 minutes now. Once that's out the way, hvac box is easy to remove. If you want to change the evaporator or heater core, plunk it on a bench and go to town. Couldn't imagine trying that with the box in the car.

I found a guy parting out a 240d. He let me pull the 4spd trans and all that goes with it for my swap, along with the entire evac system knobs, controls heater hoses and all for $300. He kept asking why don't I buy the whole car for $600? I didn't have the room.

There seem to be w123s for sale on CL all around me lately, even one in my local lkq pick a part yard. Though I'm in Houston, not the rust belt.

Far as I know, only the 240D came with manual heat controls in the U.S. models, but I had a manual set-up in my 78 Euro 300D. But there aren't many out there. Don

I concur with Ollo. Either find a 240D us spec or a euro model with manual controls. Could be a 250 or 280e or of course any diesel model.

The W123 300D from 77 - 81 used the complicated evil servo system. Looking at the dash board, the push buttons are vertical.

The W123 300D Turbo Diesel from 82 - 85 have the auto climate control system, and the push buttons on the dash are horizontal.

All W123 240D`s have the manual control Heat/AC system.

If you see a manual system in any of the above model years, then it is probably a grey market car.

In the FSM the three systems are referred to as

type one - the manual system. 77 - 83

type two - the evil servo 77 - 81

type three - the auto AC/CC system with the Mono Valve. 82 - 85

Just a funny notion on this very informative thread.....
Will you have to shut the AC off before entering a highway?
