HELP Engine air filter, plus

So i posted this on benzworld but got mostly flames. What i can find in the manual does not show the filter cover. I undid the clips but i do not want to break anything. On top of th housing appears to be a MAS or similiar. and it looks tome like that will have to be disconneted from intake tube where it passes through the side firewall??

car ran better in the afternoon, and yesterday was teh first cold mornign i have driven this car.

here is OP

First off, how do you get the air filter cover off?

1993 300D W124 2.5l

Second, I was going on long drive so i went to valvoline for an oil change. They used 10-40 syn it was all they had. I think they tried to check the air filter too.

SO I drove it three hours home, and it started acting up. Missing and dieing at lights etc, low power.

It seems like it was getting better after i found a vacuum line loose near air filter, i reconnected but never shut the car off.

I am mechanic myself just not as experienced with MB and their diesels

is there an thing that an oil change could effect? IE on 7.3 the injectors are oil fired so it could effect it.

so if you have any ideas to the running i would appreciate it, and a link to how to replace the air filter would be great.

Check the oil to make sure they put in the correct amount, let the car sit overnight and check it in the morning on a level surface. My diesel will start rough once it is low on oil.

This should help in the air filter change: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giSYGhbx6zU

Thoroughly inspect the engine to ensure that all the vacuum hoses are connected.

The top of the air filter should clip to the bottom with spring wire buckles. Sometimes, these will come loose and fall down into the fender area. There should be two to a side. The top of the air filter contains the air mass sensor, and old-fashioned flapper design. If you need to remove the top, you need to unplug the electrical connector and undo the air hose connection. If the air mass sensor doesn't work, it's going to affect EGR, and may have an effect on wastegate operation on the later cars.

Oil change places know nothing about these cars. Did they replace the oil filter? Did they know where it is? Use diesel rated oils, such as 15-40 Rotella, Delo or Delvac. Nothing bad will happen from one fill of 10-40 Valvoline, but don't make a habit of it.

Yes I brought my own filter.

Here is what it did this morning. I parked it at 4 pm and started it at 9 am it was 60 degrees.

I park slightly up hill my driveway is about 200 feet long gentle slope.

As soon as glow plugs went off it fired right up and idled nicely for my usual two minute warm up.

I get in rev it gently s few times to see how she will act. Sounded good. When I released it did drop to 250rpm but recovered. So I got in turned it around and headed down the drive. When I brake at the end it stalls.

Get it fired back up sound good. Wait another minute leAve. Get 1/10 mile up road it stalks again. Get it started. Running rough sink park it stalls again. This time does not want to start. I give a spray of fuel in breather it fired up and dies. Do it again it fired and stays running.

Ran rough for a few minutes but cleared up. Drove it 40 miles to fort Campbell for appointment. No further issues. Will up date when I go out and try to leave.

Video is not similar to my airfoil yet housing at all Mine is square as a mas sitting on top. It does have s bunch of clips but seems like the mas is holding it in place. Do not want to break anything getting rough with it.

By any chance did the oil change place loosen the fuel filter? Your problem of starting and then stalling sounds like air in the fuel system. Also check return lines to see if any are damaged as they can let the fuel bleed off if air seeps in.

Ya know, I wouldn't put it past them to have accidently loosened the ful filter...

I was the operations manager at an oil change shop and some of the other guys working at other shops were just plain idiots. My guys and I had to fix several mess ups that were made by the other shops. Try bleeding the fuel system.

UDATE

I have a fuel leak but i can not find it. Here is the wierd thing. Where i park the car sits facing uphill. I never see or smell anything. I swap cars with my father inlaw, and he parks it in his level garge. puddle of fuel.

So it is leaking in the front. If it is facing uphim it runs back to tank, if its level it runs out of ??

I got teh airfilter replaced. once i loosened the clamp and 5 clips it took a little force but it came ou without damage.

From the factory your fuel lines go like this:

Tank->short rubber line->long metal line->short rubber lines underhood->engine->short rubber lines->long metal return line->short rubber return line.

It's most likely something under the hood

The airflow sensor will not make the engine stall or run rough, if it is disconnected it can affect EGR which in your car also affects boost (or at least I understand that the '93 300D has the vacuum-operated wastegate).

Do you still have the pan under the car? This can let fuel puddle until it is parked, perhaps the fuel was not enough to spill out the back on your driveway but came out of the drain on level ground?

Does sound like the fuel leak is your driveability problem. A clogged fuel filter will cause it to stall when coming to an idle, but you will also see a lack of power at higher RPM and higher throttle settings. Fuel filter loosened and then tightened? Someone might have a great observation there, if the filter didn't seal properly it will leak when running, can end up with air in it after sitting. Typically in this case it will start normally, but as the bubble(s) make it to the pump it can run rough and potentially stall (probably <30seconds from start), then the bubble passes and things are good again (other than the leak) until shutdown.

The fuel filter has a channel on top, should be fuel in it if it has been leaking, these symptoms would indicate a fairly small leak.
