Will the Cruise Speed Sensor Work for Aftermarket Cruise??

Got a question which I have a feeling will be a hard one but never know???

My euro didn't come with a cruise control, I would love to pull one from a junk 300 and install it but that will be pricey. I do have an aftermarket kit from the 80's which would also do the job...

Now this one wants you to install the speed sensor on the drive shaft. Have to wire on magnets and mount the sensor on the tunnel. I don't see this holding up to well...

Now I know the factory cruise used a speed sensor on the back of the speedometer, and I do have an extra.

Does anyone know if that would work in place of the drive shaft magnets?

I was thinking of comparing the resistance between the two...but not positive if that would give me the answer....

Probably not. The aftermarket ones are generally Hall-effect and the MB one is Variable Reluctor.

I know it well - that's where I learned about Hall-effect sensors

Check out this thread on converting my mechanical speedo to an electronic one on my project - Mechanical to Electronic Speedometer Conversion I think you'll find some interesting options.

By the way, even though this worked great, when I replaced my 722.4 transmission with a 722.3 I swapped in an electronic tailcone with the pickup built in. The teeth are still on the driveshaft though!

I'll check that out...Would be an option....both the cars need new cables and as we all know these speedo's never work more then a few months at a time...Gets annoying when you reset the blocks....and then they stop working again...

I've seen a few threads on here where people have used the audiovox kit with the built in sensor on the speedo with success... You might want to wire it in temporarily and just see if it works... nothing lost if it doesn't

Just curious, why do you think it would be pricey?

I just helped a guy in Australia do the very same thing on his 190E. Junkyard parts total was <$100. Shipping to Australia wasn't cheap though lol.

What do you mean never work more than a few months?

Probably would require a 700 mile round trip, the junk yards here are crazy expensive...I think they think that all the tourist that come to the grand canyon will stop by and "pull" a souvenir...

The euro speedo isn't the correct one for the rear, thus reads a bit high....both have bouncing needles....both block counters work when they want to...plus the cars more then likely have more then 75k that has never registered...I've had em apart more then once for repairs...The normal w123 speedo headaches...
