Is The K1 Shut Off / Plate Non-Return Valve Necessary On A 722.3 Transmission?

I'm having nothing but problems putting this 722.361 transmission back together. I think I MAY have the valve body put back together correctly now, but I won't know until it's in the car. But, I noticed that it's missing the K1 shut off valve (126-270-28-89), shown in the red box.

I believe the valve body originally had one as there is a mark on the mounting plate on the transmission that is shaped like the valve. I guess it fell off at some point. I don't know if it was when I removed the valve body this time, or the time before when I had it apart a few years ago.

I opened up a spare 722.317 transmission I have and it was missing the valve, too, even though the mark was there like it originally had one.

Is this valve really necessary? It looks like the valve that fits between the halves of the valve body in the spare transmission fits, but it's a different color and part number according to EPC, so I don't know if it would work.

I also feel compelled to link this thread to 2 others as they all deal with connected issues.

I do recall that valve being there in my 91 722.361.

EDIT: Checked a picture I took, it is there:

Thanks for the confirmation. So, it was definitely originally there. I guess I'll have to assume it does something and order one.
