86-91 W126 aux fan into W123 300D ??

Does any one know if an aux fan from a W126 560SEL can replace the aux fan in a W123 300D? Will it fit or can it be made to fit? At 16 inch, it is a lot bigger (43% in area) than the 300D's 12 inch. Has anyone done it?

Search for it, there is a thread somewhere, I think it may have been BenzTurbo. I'll see if I can find it. I seem to remember that it fit with a little hacking.

I think I found it... he doesn't give too much detail on it, but here is the thread and the pic:

Thanks for the link. I think an aux fan from a gasser 260E W124 is the same as one from 560SEL. W123 Electric Aux. Fan Upgrade

W124 is the same fan as in the w126. But I think the outer grill might be different.

Here is my setup, a w126 Bosch fan. I just bent the support and modified a little bracket for the bottom. Plugged it in directly to the existing pig tail.

Nice, looks factory! You bent the W123 supports? How? Did you use heat? Tubing bender?

Stuck it on a vice with a thick rag in between. Paint cracked a bit, I plan on repainting it when I do the whole car.

Picked up a fan from an 87 190E that is the same diameter (16") but a little thicker at the motor (3- 3/4").

Test fitting it I found the bottom bracket interfering with the fan. The bracket is welded at the bottom but fastened with 2 sheet metal screws on top so I can't take it off (unless I cut the weld) to modifiy. it. I am going to take a dremel and grind it to clear the fan. Is that what you did?

Depending on your mounting depth, it may hit your grill as you shut your hood down.

No, just a little massaging of that brace. The bracket for the fan I bent to fit and stuck a sheet metal screw through both the brace and bracket.

But perhaps my aftermarket parallel condenser made it easier to install....

Your parallel flow condenser is thinner than my stock condenser. There is no way my fan will fit w/o grinding. Did you remove the bumper to do the install?

I got the fan to slip into the space after a lot of filing and chiseling. still have to install the tubular brackets.

Could not get the Dremel in the tight space to grind. I did not want to remove the bumper. Took a sharp chisel and a hammer and twisted off the sliver with long nose pliers. Also had to file down the rim of the fan.

If this was a Bosch fan, I wouldn't have to grind the bottom of the chrome grill surround, which is hitting the nut which secures the fan blade to the motor. The area marked in Prussian blue needs to be ground away.

Aw man that's too bad you had to do that kind of surgery. I didn't have to remove the bumper just plastic trim pieces. However, I did have the advantage of having my condenser and radiator out when I did my fresh air cabin filter mod. But looking at it, with the way my condenser fits, and is able to unbolt and move, I think I could of still made it work without taking it all out.

Thanks for posting these ideas. Gonna start scrounging for a fan like Dave's.

Dave, what are the specs on your condenser?
