NNNnnnnOOOOoooo!

While everything superficially looks clean, the engine will need to come completely apart for a more through cleaning.

Dry ice blasting only displaces dirt and does not wash it away like a solvent bath. This means grit is jammed between cam bearings , piston rings and makes it's way to the oil pan.

Also with the cam being slightly rusted, valve stems would be rusted also. Sure then engine will run as is, but it won't last. Given the engine was "free" he can afford to buy a gasket set and do a proper cleaning / inspection.

My source on that injection pump information is the book "Original Mercedes SL".

Upon a close read the book actually states if you get a pagoda SL with the two pipe mechanical injection that it came from a sedan.

It states that the six pipe is correct for the SL of the same era.

It does not say that they did not also (probably later) that they put six pipe pumps in sedans so it appears there is room for us both to be right on this at least according to the book.

I saw a W114 (or 15, not sure) sedan yesterday at a car show with the six outlet pump. There is also a system that looks like what I would call a "throttle body" type fuel injection, that does not have an injection pump. Remember, Mercedes-Benz was the first with any kind of fuel injection in production autos, so you can imagine the many different ways they tried it through the years. In this area, they were way ahead of everyone else. Four wheel disc brakes is another one.
