OM606 OEM/ Performance Parts (USA)

I'm currently trying to find parts for a OM606.962 and I'm having a hell of a time. I'm looking for pistons, rings, rods, crack shaft, upgraded camshaft (if available), bigger turbo, and the 603 mechanical pump with bigger elements(7mm or 7.5mm) Or maybe an entire overhaul kit? I've searched and can't find much, I've found pelican parts but they don't offer everything I'm looking for. In the US is there anywhere to get these parts? The ultimate goal is to have a supercharger fed turbo diesel that deals around 400hp+500+ft lbs
Any info will be helpful
Thanks an advance

A bigger turbo and the pump mods will get you into that ballpark for power, doubt if there is any need to do any internal work to the engine other than ensure its healthy.

MB sells the parts still, but rebuilding a MB diesel engine is NOT for a typical mechanic to attempt. The factory service manual will get you started, but that manual was written for trained factory mechanics (in other words it leaves out a lot of detail). It will only be available online for a fee via startek, unless you can find an old copy on DVD somewhere.

I submit that you'll be way ahead by simply finding a healthy engine to start with, and focusing on the turbo and injection pump.

I don't think a whole lot of "performance parts" are available for the Mercedes engines in general. There are people out there making ridiculous power out of the Mercedes diesels with the stock bottom end, so I don't understand what it is you're wanting to upgrade there.

For an OM603 pump, you'll need to find a used unit and send it off for upgrade. It certainly isn't something you can just pick up off the shelf. The OM603 injection pumps used 5.5mm injection elements for all models.

Turbo shouldn't be a huge deal to do, as mentioned above visit the Performance Tuning section of this forum, or join the Super Turbo Diesel forum which is dedicated to performance mods, though usually 617 and 603 engines. Supercharger + Turbocharger may be a bit overkill if you actually want the engine to last or do any useful work. If it's a show car, go crazy, but if you want to actually use the thing for anything it might be a good time to make sure your expectations can be met by reality.

There are lots of available options, everything but the pump can be sourced in US. NA exhaust cam, springs etc. No need to go inside unless you really want an adventure, the internals are good for 700NM, YMMV. Plenty of resources out there with some googling.

If you have good compression, those bottom ends will handle 350hp no problem. Myna has injection pumps for sale for like $1k I believe that is a 603 pump with new elements and calibrated on his bosch fuel machine.

Thanks for the responses and helpful information. Anyone know how much power a NA OM606 can put out? Is it possible to put a turbo on it and tune the pump? My friend has one I can buy but it's not the turbo version.

I am not sure if the N/A bottom end is the same as turbo, but if it is, then yes everything turbo should bolt on. Go on youtube and enter OM606 dyno test. I believe one test showed about 500 lb/ft torque with only the turbo and pump modified.

It has been done, but probably not the best way to start. There are many differences between turbo and non-turbo engines (sodium filled exhaust valves, special pistons and oil cooling jets, probably more things). In other words, you may end up with melted pistons.

The NA injection pump will be missing some key things (like an ALDA) and is not a good starting point either. It may be an electronically controlled pump, which also makes modifications much much harder.

IIRC 606 na has sodium filled valves and squirters. Pretty sure there are a couple people running in the 250-300+hp range on NA. Would definitely need a turbo pump (not hard to find). The intake valves are smaller on the NA, but exhaust is larger. If you don't mind doing an engine swap, starting with NA is a good way to shake out all the design decisions and drivetrain issues.

Thanks for all the info and being very helpful. But one more question lol. Is the OM603 pump compatible with any other diesels? Maybe a OM648?

I'm pretty sure the OM648 is a CDI diesel. Very different operating conditions to an IDI diesel like the 603 and 606.

the N/A 606 is good to maybe 250-300 but thats pushing it the rods are the weak point on it. if you check dieselmekens face book he has pictures of a few people that grenaded N/A engines trying to get more power. as for the turbo engine on a stock engine as long as everything is healthy they have no issue running at around 500 HP the issue becomes the turbo sizing and where you want the power band. a lot of people run HX35 or similar sized turbos making around 300 maxed out but with some down low grunt. you can also go for a HX40 or similar but then you are not seeing real spool until around 4000 rpm. you also need a better exhaust manifold and large intercooler if you intend to push the engine past maybe 250. with rods, cams, manifolds, porting, and some other internal work its possible to break 800 HP so the block and pistons are not the limit its just fuel air and at some point rod strength you need to think about. while there is some after-market for the 606 its still an oddball compared to a Chevy 350 so there will be a lot of custom fab no matter what route you take.
