Cold A/C on low fan, warm on high...Is 134a the culprit?

I have a 1991 350SD. When It came time to replace the A/C compressor, dryer, etc, I decided to move to R134a and since then, my A/C is very cold when the fan is on low speed but warm when I switch to the high fan setting. Did I make a mistake by switching to R134a?

Doubtful. I run 134a in my 300SDL and it'll blow low 40s with the fan on high. Check your recirculation flap(s), if they are stuck in "fresh air" mode, you can have poor cooling performance.

Diseasel300,

From your experience, are flap problems generally electrical or vacuum related? I would assume vacuum and I need to troubleshoot that aspect, right?
Thanks for your help.

I'm not familiar with the W140, but on the earlier cars they are vacuum operated. The pods get old and leak. Additionally, did you charge by weight or by pressure? Did you pull a deep vacuum before charging with refrigerant?

The 1991 350SD should be a W126?

Clearly coffee was lacking today... Not sure why I thought '91 was W140

If it is not a flap issue, it could easily be a refrigerant problem.
A compressor problem
A TXV problem
Or even an electrical problem.
Test what your a.c. is doing.
Ya need a HUGE shop fan in front of the vehicle.
Gauges.
Thermometers to measure line temps.

When you put R134a into an unmodified R12 system, you will absolutely have a refrigerant problem. The laws of physics guarantee it.

Unmodified? Please tell me he at a minimum changed the oil in his system?

TXV would be very close... the hoses in a 91 are likely barrier... but not for sure... leakage could be an issue.

The condenser and its fan are the same with the 93 as the 91...
