Home-made "Coo-Coo" mats for my TD (not to be confused with"Coco" mats)

I bought a large rug from Lowes that had a similar look as the "Calico" color Coco mats. I had a friend edge bind them. I call them "Coo-Coo" mats. They actually look pretty good!

That’s hilarious and actually pretty impressive.

I have Coco mats in the CDI and in the front of the W124. They made a slight manufacturing mistake on the ones for the CDI so I was able to keep the front mats for the W124.

If I bought genuine coco mats for the front, center, and rear, it would have cost about $400. The rug was $50, and the edge binding $60. I think it looks pretty good for the $.

Thanks for the idea. I’m going to make some. Finally I can use my walking foot sewing machine again. There are some good YouTube videos on how to do edging using scraps of upholstery material. I’m definitely going to make some coo coo mats once I get my new to me cars engine vetted.

The guy the did the edge binding used a regular walking foot machine (Consew?) with an attachment the feeds the binding in, while folding it on top and under. I can't imagine the attachment to be that expensive. Doing this job by hand would be very difficult. I had no idea what kind of machine was used to bind the edge of carpet, but after seeing it, it is pretty cool. The carpet guy has a HUGE table with holes in it (kinda like an air hockey table), and can bind the edge of a 12'X12' piece of carpet with ease. The carpet just floats on the table and can be fed through the machine fast. I should have gotten a photo. The car carpets were actually a bit harder for him because of the tight turns.

I hand walk the machine through the tight radius corners. Not skilled enough to do otherwise. I just tack the binding on physically and run it through the machine.

I actually purchased the heavy duty machine for this but got the wrong machine. It needs further geared down for my skill level. Or I should say lack of it.

I bet they're going to be far cleaner than coco mats, no fibers filling po the interior and gumming up the seat adjusters etc......

? Does your friend have an Auto Upholstery Shop too? .

Nicely done. I considered doing the same until I buckled and bought coco mats.
What did you do you for the bottoms? I remember finding some paint on rubber adhesive that seemed like the way.

Nothing. They are just sitting on top of the original mats. I use my E320 wagon for utilitarian purposes, so the TD will not get any bags of ready-mixed concrete (or anything like it) placed on the mats. My TD is only used for cruising around on the weekends and car shows mostly. In between uses, it stays in my garage.......Rich
