captmd SWAP

so I can find my post, I know swap has been done. No reply from You Tube articles which have swap. I have both cars complete . will use Marine engineer to do swap. Need to know which eng. mounts to which transmission to use . My 380 SEC , parked for 4 month, started idling good , pushed gas to speed up , thud lock up? timing chain , cams lifters look in place. Thanks fo response Mickey

It may be useful for you to review a number of posts/threads started by Clemson88 on the subject of converting a gas 126 to diesel power. It is more involved than it seems at first glance.

1983 MB 380 SEC

Use a 603 out of a W126. Bolt in.

Thank you GregMN, I believe a 603 is transition. will SD motor mounts be needed? will they bolt in to baise on frame of 380? I'm in south Texas. Mr. Vera of Corpus does not think it will work. wish I could change his mind.

You got me... I just photo shopped it and then used it as a daily driver for a couple of years....

A 603 block has motor mount attachment points for a W124 and a W126 body. If the donor was a W126, then the mounts are already in the correct location. If the donor was a W124, then the mounts need to be moved to the other mounting points.

Take a day to pull the motor and transmission, as a unit, out of the diesel donor. Label sensor wires as you take them off.

Take another day to pull the gas motor and transmission out of the 380. Swap the radiator with the diesel engine. Swap the exhaust system. Put the diesel engine and transmission in the 380.

Start it up and drive it off the lot....

There are lots of little fiddly bits to tidy up, but I have started the car on the third day and driven it.

The first generation W126 had the same OM617 as a W123 300CD. It should not be difficult to swap it over if you have access to a first gen W126 for parts. You will need a W126 oil filter stand and oil pressure sender. The CD radiator and oil cooler should work in the SEC. You will also need a trans with an electronic speedo (from a first gen W126-D). If you are clever, you can make the cable driven speedo work in the W126 instrument cluster, but that may be more work than sourcing a first gen W126 trans. Of course the easiest swap would be the OM603 as suggested, but you already have the W123 as a donor. I hope the CD donor is not a complete running car. It would be more valuable as a driver than a donor. If it is a rust bucket, well then have at it (just my opinion though)......Rich

There's a 603 from an SDL nearby my work for sale. Should be pretty straightforward.

Both MB are 01/83 built. 300CD was sideswiped on right side by 18 wheeler 10 years ago . Engine never stop running with Left side caved in 10 inches at A pillar, windshield did not pop out. once home drove it around with right ft. wheel at 45% angle.
126 380 SEC parked for 4 month, started idled good, increased gas locked up with thud. Starter will not turn engine. Cams ,lifters, push rods , timing chains in place.
All suggestions appreciated, MICKEY
