The VGS replacement is almost $2000 and it has to be done at the dealer because the VGS is a Theft Relevant Part and cannot be sold over the counter.
That's whats kind of confusing, I could see a software update since the car has been running with the same transmission software since 2013. It's a very early USA OM651 but they could do that without dropping the pan. It seems likely they replaced some of the hardware and the 2 liters of fluid would be consistent with a VGS replacement.

I'll pull the receipt for the work and run all the parts number to see if there was a VGS in there somewhere. There were around 20 parts on the invoice and I only ran 4-5 of the numbers.

There is a 4yr/50K warranty on the newly installed parts, my GLK250 had 112K miles on the clock when the mods were installed - the only emissions related issue I had over that timeframe was a bad DEF tank level sensor. The sensor is replaceable but most dealers just opt to replace the whole tank for $1200.

I agree with Bare that these after treatment systems seem to be less prone to trouble if the vehicle is used more in a highway environment. My GLK has had almost zero pure city/low speed/idling use.

Its sort of hard to say how these systems will hold-up longer term, many people have had issues. I've had a mostly great experience - the 4yr/50K coverage on the mods is a nice safeguard against future issues but I'd have to agree with Tom. It'll take a 100K to be sure.

One thing for sure... if there isn't any warranty coverage and you have an issue things can get expensive fast. Finding people that have the tools/experience/knowledge to do intelligent diagnosis and repair isn't easy either.

My GLK is almost at 100k and has had zero adblue related issues so far....only the DPF itself was replaced about 15k ago as it wasn't regenning efficiently anymore....I suspect lots of idling in its prior life in chicago.

I drive about 40/60 city freeway....no problem.

Went through the line items on my emissions recall work and it appears the VGS was indeed replaced. Not sure why the emissions work required the replacement of the transmission controller ECM and solenoids but its definitely on the repair order.

Looked at the parts replaced on a relatives 2014 E250 bluetec that had the emissions installed and there wasn't a VGS replacement so it would appear that there are different parts required for different versions of the exact same powertrain.

My GLK250 is a very early USA car, build date was in early Feb 2013 with an in-service date of May 2013.

I've now run an entire tank of fuel on the newly modified car and there appears to be no change in MPG results. I still feel like the torque is slightly better than it was before the mods.

My dealer has had me on a waiting list for months because they've been unable to get the needed parts to complete it. I half suspect incompetence of that dealer though, I might call the one about an hour away from me to see if they can get it done.

Good idea. If they don't want to do it probably a good idea not to push them into it.

So I have grown tired of the rough ride. I went to buy replacement shocks at another place and was told all shocks for my car are out of stock.

Looking here brought me to the question whether I have active suspension or not. I assume not but how to tell?

If you have active suspension you would have extra controls related to it on the center console to the right of the audio system knob.
If you just have the knob, with clear, back, and the two favorite buttons that is passive suspension.

Also you can look at the shock, active suspension will have an air line going to it. Passive suspension, it’s just a plain old shock absorber.

Sold to the local Ford dealer. Today I drove the Jeep and the 92 TD. I'll miss the sound system more than anything else.

What made you decide to let her go, if I may ask?

Not the troublesome Blutec system (and dealing with MB on compensation)?

To be honest, I had no trouble with mine but only drove it 50k km. Others had many problems and I just didn't want it giving us problems when we made our annual trip South to USA.

I did like that car.

The reason I asked was because the M272 engine in my wife's '07 E350T-4M on the S211 chassis seems to be fading rapidly; after driving my '06 E320 CDI, she has her heart set on a diesel, but needs more cargo capacity than a sedan. The only feasible options available to us are BlueTEC versions of the G, M or R class, and we've narrowed down our search to a later ML350 - most likely a 2011 or 2012, and was hoping y'all could provide some recommendations.

Best Regards,
Rob

I don't like the way mb handled the emission settlement with the car owners. VW did a magnificent job by comparison. At present I would not buy any benzes with the DEF required.
