617.912 Head Salvage

I’m a hound for research so I apologize for posting a thread where I know the information is out there but time is of the essence to salvage a head before the car is scrapped. The engine blew a head gasket when it overheated according to the owner. A coolant hose Ruptured and a 16 y/o was at the helm, nuff said. It’s a late model’83 engine # 12-086762 with the skinnny pencil plugs.
Did they modify the block, stroke, bore, piston, a as well as the head For the displacement increase? I.e. can I use it on an earlier 616 or do I need the block as well?
I know there’s a chance the head is warped but I’m gambling against that. I have all the head bolts, cam, and lifters out. Do I need to remove the hollow oilers as well?

I wanted the differential as well but I don’t know the ratio. I have a manual ‘78 with 300k, the donor 175k but it’s an automatic. Is it worth the effort?

A 617 is 5-cylinder. A 616 is 4-cylinder. Not sure how you're planning to use a 5-cylinder head on a 4-cylinder block...

I think it's just a more aggressive cam. The bore is 91.0 mm up to '79 and 90.9 after.

The FSM says the 616 cam shaft codes are 02, 06, or 10. This one is marked “61 H”
Is that weird? My earlier 616 is clearly stamped “02”

If the engine was run until it died due to overheating, double and triple check the combustion area for cracks, particularly in the area between the injector nozzle ports and the valve seats.

I’m planning on pulling it off here in about 30 minutes. I won’t know until then built I appreciate the tips. I have a magnifying glass and a straight edge. If there’s anything obvious I won’t be likely to pay for a magnaflux.

Damn! I thought it was welded on. I beat on it with a 3 lb hammer and hardwood block From just about every angle and finally gave up on it. I figured I might as well salvage the glow system plug for temp. No idea what it’s called & the coolant hose fitting on the aft end. No sooner than I pulled on the wrench the head broke loose. 😂
It looks like 3 of 4 pre chambers got really hot but no visible damaged to any of the valves, pistons, or cylinder walls near as I can tell. I’ll get a straight edge on it tomorrow.

Did you get the two secret bolts up front behind the timing case?

Hmm... I’m not aware of any secrets But the head came off without breaking anything off. Does that mean I discovered the secret bolts?

I believe he is referring to the two smaller Allen head bolts (5MM ?) located in the cast webbing in front of the timing chain gear. The ones you need an extension on your socket to reach. The ones which, if you don't block the opening with a rag, tend to fall into the timing chain cavity resulting in a voluminous amount of cursing and a lot of un-needed, extra work.

Something is definitely missing. I removed everything necessary to remove the head Which is in the trunk of my car.

Could you be referring to the 617? That was a typo in the thread topic. This is a 616.912
