Finished the passenger rear brakes. On a test drive, noticed a slight grinding noise from the rear. Dang! Will have to tear back into it, but she drives for now.

The rear wiper doesn't work so I popped off the cover. The motor works, but the wiper shaft is frozen (or seems to be). I've tried a combo of PB Blaster and lightly prying on the mechanism, but nada and I don't wanna force/break anything. What am I missing?

Also flushed and filled the SLS system. Now Fern isn't as much of a dumpy butt.

Mercy buckups

Changed Fern's oil and filter today. Not too bad a job - that filter is much easier to get to than the filter on my TDI (don't have her any more due to clutch issues...boo). Up next is the dash cap to cover up the cracked mess in there now. Maybe when it's not so dang hot.

Also, any idea on how to get the rear wiper motor/shaft out? I loosened everything up and followed PP's directions, but the shaft doesn't want to budge and I don't want to break the window.

Post Tinkering

IIRC you need to open the inside hatch cover and remove the wiper motor complete .

Be sure to work over a large light colored sheet of cloth, I like .50 cent beach towels from the thrift store . once a tiny part goes " !POING!" it enters the 5th dimension and you'll never see it again .

Every time I see a TD rear hatch get scrapped because it's bent or missing the glass I cringe, only the latch proper is still available new, everything else is good luck charlie .

Let us know how the wiper motor repair goes please .

I took my diesel Mercedes for a quick drive and checked the fuel filter for any signs of clogging.

I finally added a chromed tail pipe to Geraldine. What do you think? It deflects the exhaust from the bumper.

Apologies for the sideways pictures. Not sure how to fix.

Thumbs up Tail Pipe Tip / Extension

I like it but it's a shade too short for my taste .

Installed new fuel return hoses on the injectors. The old ones were cracked and rotting and leaking diesel onto the engine. Answered the question: "Why do I smell diesel when I'm driving??"

In retrospect, it would have been better to replace them when I adjusted my valves a few weeks ago and had everything apart. All the accelerator linkage would have been out of the way.

Fern got some new hatch weatherstripping.

Her rear hatch wasn't sealing very well at all. It would rattle when she was at idle and rain kept getting in. I tried to adjust it, but wasn't able to find anything to adjust, nor was I able to find a new hatch seal.

I found some Duck brand "Auto and Marine Rubber Weatherstripping" at the Wally; it's EDPM rubber 9.5mm wide X 7.9mm high X 2.5m long and comes with two rolls per box. I had to use both rolls to do the sides and top. Now the hatch doesn't rattle at idle and it's supposed to rain tonight so we'll see how well it works.

Thanks...

What a day! Lesson learned; always trust the engineers

I have a 1985 300td that ive been slowly bringing back to life over the past year, couldnt understand why i absolutely could not stop the excessive oil leaking from the sump gasket. changed it twice...

however;;; when I first got the car the factory air cleaner was completely shot on a broken mount, and the uboot was torn and sucking in atmospheric air.

I unfortunately had to go the pod filter route, and rerouted my pcv to an oil catch can, that fed into the intake before the turbo. after driving it for a bit i tried one of those oil cap tests (i know about all the controversy of its efficacy) but i noticed it was dancing a bit more than i remembered.

I figured my pcv routing was pretty good, but after gathering some parts locally and returning it to the stock air filter, the excessive crankcase pressure seems to have ceased, and im hoping that helps clear up the leaks a bit.

ALWAYS TRUST THE MERCEDES ENGINEERS! thats my lesson for the day

I put a new battery in, cleaned out the mouse nest under the hood (included frozen carcass)plugged in the block heater for an hour, checked the oil, cycled the glow plugs, and cranked the engine over till it fired up.
Now it's time for the front brake rotors/pads and water pump replacement....which is why the car has been "on vacation" for two years.

Pulled both rear door panels with the wife to freshen everything back there. Found out why the driver's side window wouldn't raise all the way (it stopped about 1/4" short of the top): some of the teeth on the window motor arm were sheared off at the top of the travel. Looks like I gotta find another motor. We replaced the (non-existant) vapor barrier on the passenger side door.

Tried in vain to get the tach working again. PO said it worked and I've got everything plugged in on the instrument cluster but no love. Any ideas, Pelican Parts Hive Mind?

1) Poor connection at the tach amplifier plug on the left fender.
(Corrosion and/or splayed open female receptacles in the socket.)
The tach amplifier looks like a small black trash can.

2) Failing tach amplifier.

3) Poor tach signal at hall sensor by crankshaft pickup and/or damaged sensor wire.

Copy - I'll look into those.

If the TA is what I (now) think it is, I always assumed it was part of the cruise control system as it's right by the connector for the cruise control actuator box thingy. Precise terminology, I know.

Good to know - learning more every day.

Thanks!

After sitting for nearly a year, i got my starter replaced in my 190D 5speed with some help from a member on here!
Took it out for a long drive, realized the tires are 10 years old, and a bit lumpy.
Tach doesnt work...
Turn signals are a bit wonky, feels like the stalk is grabbing in places...
Idk, problem for later.
The brakes are uneven, but firm.
Panic stops feel mushy.
I will pull the calipers and flush all fluid.
Probably have a stuck piston, or bad hoses somewhere.
Uneventful drive both ways though.

Fun getting her back on the road though.
