Had a '76 automatic with only 150,000 when the body rot doomed it. Have an '83 manual with 170,000 and going strong.

240 Diesel Roll Call!!!!!!!!!!!
1983 manual four speed, broke ac, manual windows, no sunroof 220K and runs. Got it in August. Minor/no rust. I just enjoy the balance of the car and the weight distribution. Steers solid into the expressway ramps. This is also my daily driver and not pretty! Getting 30+ mpg on a 20 mile plus commute.
Thanks to all who posted. ![]()

1982 240D. 4 speed, manual windows, no sunroof, no rust. Blue/Blue, 179,000 miles.
Really a fun car. The 240D is the best kept secret in automotive history. - Patrick Edit: I just bolted the 250,000 km badge to my grill. ![]()

1982 240D Euro with automatic and 68,000 miles. Bought it in 2000 with good body but had to replace engine with one with 84,000 miles. Manual everything and no cruise or a/c. Would like to do a 4 speed conversion when I find the perfect donor.

81 240D Beige. 222K After a worrysome relationship early on, has become a full on love affair with this car. Have decided that Im going to keep her for a LOOOONNNG time and have put bilstein HDs, new timing chain, new injectors, glowplugs, cooling system, etc etc. It ticks away like a watch now!!!!!! :p :p :p People just dont seem to understand the sublime satisfaction of 73 horsepower, fully manual car that you dont even need a manual to work on. There is no question in my mind that the car will never let me down and will always get me there in style. Beautiful car to drive and a work of art to work on. and it runs on veggie oil! Bought a 300TD thinking it would just be a better version of the 240, but although faster, it just cant hold a candle to the simplicity and feeling of driving my 240. The 300TD is for sale now!
OK, time to wipe the tears from my eyes and get back to work. Cheers! |

1983 white automatic and power everything, 280k miles,
still strong but with some rear sheet metal issues; 1981 240D (stick) 140k on clock, crank windows and no sunroof, in fleet since last October...Also have an '83 300CD, '73 VW convertile (bought new), '49 Packard.
Think 240D was the epitome of the passenger car...will never wear out or look old. Fits the definition of "perfect" in that nothing needs to be added to it, and nothing needs to be taken away. IMHO, all "progress" in automobile history since the '80s MB diesels has in fact been retrograde...we need sensors to start the wipers when its raining...or to tell us when the tires are low? My 240's provide me with the only brief periods I can look forward to consistently, every day...pathetic as that is, many poor souls don't even have that. |

'77 240D, 616 eng., auto trans &

Old thread! I just got my 240D rolling, a champagne gold '83. It had no engine, but I got all the service records. It sounded like it was well maintained, but still spun a rod bearing at 243,000 miles. The interior was stripped out, but I got it all back in now, along with a turbo 5 cylinder. The body is in great shape -- it will need some minor rust repair and new paint, I want to get it painted the same color. Love the car.

240D roll call
My 84 was bought in France by the wife of the man who was shot out the cannon (daily). She brought it over in 88 & federalized it. It just turned 200K, burns no oil, cruises @ 80 with the 5sp (which is an overdrive -- got no manual, but 4th seems like direct - can't shift to 5th before 50 ...). It is white with a burgundy cloth interior, manual AC, power front windows & manual rears, no sunroof. Needs seat springs for the driver side, door hold-open on driver's side, getting the front end down where it started (up about 3" from the federalizing). In daily use & getting about 31mpg average ---- SVO soon.

I safed my 76 240D from going to the the wrecking yard.
The yard guy wanted to pay noting, I offered the owner 25 Dollars. It needed a new engine, paint, seats, tires and some other small stuff. I rebuild the engine with parts from a 1980 on 240D, like pistons, pre chambers, valves, valve springs, cam, and rocker arms. That should increase the output to 72 HP. A newer IP from a W123, without the pneumatic regulator was also used. The car got a 300 Dollar One Day Paint job, and seats from a W123. That was in 1998 and I am still driving it today. ![]()

I bought my 240D two years ago for $575 and actually drove it close to 200 miles to get it home . . when it actually started it ran so rough . . . my whole body was numb by the time I got it home. To date I have replaced/performed the following: all filters (fuel, oil, air) all fuses motor mounts and "T" mount valve cover gasket and valve adjustment intake/exhaust manifold gasket starter all clutch components slave cylinder flex discs all belts tie rods UCAs LCA bushings ball joints cleaned and painted the LCA, spring perches, spindles wheel bearings/races/grease parking brake shoes front and back brake hoses, replaced all fluid and bled the system main rubber fuel line from the tank various vacuum connectors, light bulbs and o-rings washer fluid pump rubber grommet fuel primer pump glow plugs It passed inspection a couple weeks ago and is now registered and on the road for the first time in about 5 years. Very little rust present (typical spots . . battery tray, trunk side wells, and driver floor board . . . nothing that some POR-15 will not fix. Still plenty of things to see to, but I am happy with the progress thus far and finally having it on the road is a good feeling.

I got a 240d about a year ago. Actually I got two. The first was a 1981 automatic with power windows and manual sunroof, burgundy interior that was tired, ripped, and rippled. Ostensibly a parts car for the second, it nonetheless could be coaxed to life and driven anywhere. The odo showed 230,000 miles and the body had rust issues throughout. The second was a 1982 manual with crank windows and power sunroof, the palomino interior was/is nearly perfect. Starts in -5 degree temps and runs quite nicely. Good paint, no rust and nearly perfect throughout, it barely shows 50,000 miles of use, let alone the 207,000 the odo reports. Today it reads 227,000, I drive it everyday and everywhere.
They're actually racing: ![]() I sold the "parts" car to my nephew for $500. It's in the foreground in the picture above, washed for the first time in years the paint actually took a bit of shine. He took the car apart, fixed some things, drove it for a while, learned some stuff and sold it for $1,100. We were talking about making it a RallyX car, but along came money and it was gone. Maybe someday I'll find another. Here's a bunch of shots of the car right before I bought it. http://www.flickr.com/photos/toasterpastry/sets/72157623613525614/
