Need 240D parts help
I called Phil and he wasn't able to supply the part. Called the dealer and they can't figure out what exactly I need.
On the accelerator linkage of my 240D, there's a rotating rod that runs from the firewall to the rest of the accelerator linkage at the injection pump. The joint is formed by a rather large rubber block. That block has split apart, leaving me with a non functional accelerator linkage. Does anybody know what this part is called? Or is it permanently bonded to the stop lever, requiring me to buy a stop lever? Any help would be appreciated.

Is this the "pivot mount" that bolts to the firewall? That would be the item that converts your pressing the pedal (linear motion) to a rotational motion of the rod to the linkage.
I see that part in the Performance Products catalog for $7.65 and its probably on FastLane too. This is a fairly common problem. The OEM part has a rubber/plastic that degrades pretty badly with age. Typically the new part designs are stronger and use a modern plastic material that is much tougher. Ken300D

Thanks Ken, but that's not it. It's at the other end, near the injection pump. Since I posted that, the dealer has figured out that it is indeed the stop lever. A dealer only part at $51. Ouch.

I see. Well I thought I'd take a shot at it because my pivot point on the firewall was one of the first things I had to replace on the 1982 300D. The car was pretty weak to drive with a bad pivot point because you couldn't fully open up the injection pump to supply fuel. Plus it was a little dangerous because eventually the rod may have dropped out.
One of my fond early memories of the car was letting my brother drive it. He turned onto a slightly uphill street at an intersection and immediately pulled over to the side because he thought the car had blown its engine. He was used to a working accelerator pedal on a gasolene car, and he thought he was pressing it down plenty far enough to get power. It's considerably better now with the new pivot point. I think I have the same issue on my daughter's 1982 240D and I addressed it, somewhat temporarily, by using electrical tape to attach popsicle stick segments to the two blades that fit in the slots of the item that used to have the rubber bonded to it. If you do a decent job it typically lasts about 18 months, then the electrical tape gets degraded. When the sticks fall out you know exactly what the issue is too. Hope this helps, Jim

I've got it temporarily tied together with one of those plastic strings they put around copy paper boxes. Hopefully that will get me home.
There's actually a funny story regarding this. It started happening today when I had to make a run to the airport. It manifested itself by the engine racing until I blipped the pedal a few times and it came back down. At first I thought the fast idle mechanism was binding. But I was quite a sight going through the "departing flights" area with the little Diesel engine racing and the tires chirping. It happened again at a toll booth, giving the toll collector quite a scare. This should be an interesting drive home today.

Yippee, the plastic strapping got me home! I learned today that there are several versions of this linkage. In this version, the only connection from the pedal linkage to the injection pump is through this rubber block on the Stop lever. That block had split in two. Here's a picture of it, now cemented together and reinforced with wire. I'll be ordering the replacement part tomorrow.

I just dug up this thread in order to show the picture, and realized I didn't post the "final resolution." Unfortunately, my stop lever is unique to the 1980 240 with manual tranny, so it was a dealer only part at over $50. The rubber cement and wire in the picture only held for one day, so ordered the replacement from Caliber Motors for about $35. I would highly recommend them when you have to get parts from a dealer.

Mike, I checked the local junkyard, but the 240D they had was a 1982, and they also had a 300D. But, like I said earlier, my stop lever is unique to a single year and model. And even if I could have found one, it probably wouldn't be in much better shape than the one that broke. For a critical part like this, I think it's worth spending a little more money.
