A peculiar strain of this virus is the 123 strain. It seems that some people that have multiple diesels, have only 123's. I got no problem with that, but why not try out a 115, they need love too.

I've been pondering the adsurdity of my collection too. It really isn't necessary and I don't like having more than I need but I can't help myself. I get crap from people at work a lot but they better not push too far or else I'm going to try out those moves I saw on "Enter the Dragon" last night.
The hardest part about it is being mobile. I may have a job in a couple of years that requires no strings, but I'll have to come up with some way of stashing the fleet. I mean, once you give them up, you cant very well go out and get something just like it later on.
At least the 280SEL is a brute so I'm not worried about it's condition all that much.
There definitely is a cultivation of indifference to what people think.

115's----way to go---I don't care what anyone else thinks---best car Mercedes ever built. Plus, you can turn on a dime and get change back.

Some people invariably think that 20+ year old cars, even Mercedes, are pieces of junk and their new Toyotas are much better. I've gotten used to this kind of attitude from some people and as long as they keep their mouth shut I don't care what they think. I drive these cars not because I can't afford anything more expensive, but because I admire the styling and quality engineering that goes into these cars. In my opinion they don't make them like this anymore.

OK, admitted, I only have 2 MBs and only one of those is a diesel, but I have a company car and we own a new F150 Crew Cab Lariat....guess which 2 get the garage????

I may have a solution for some of you on the insurance, though. My agent is a friend and car enthusiast as well and he has put my MBs on a collector policy that lets me have a declared value and cut my annual premiums in half. There are some yearly mileage limits, I think, but since I don't use them as daily drivers, it's not a problem. If you have 4-5 cars and aren't commuting 100 miles a day, you could probably get in. I don't think my policy even had an age requirement!!! Just a thought.....

I've owned my talon for three years now and have put 10k miles on it (almost all after I sold last car, before the MB, then last winter), that is pretty much a collector car. Both of my cars fall into the lowest mileage category (under 7.5k/yr), and are both setup as occasional, pleasure cars. Still looking for ways to save, maybe I'll look around for something like that for the next policy.

I just did a search on the net to refresh my memory of the various Mercedes models, and yes the W115 is very nice. Oh no, I might have to get one now. To me it's the ultimate definition of classic Mercedes. As far as more modern models go, the one I like most is the W140 (mid 90's S class). Too bad the diesel version was unreliable. But the W123 is still my most favorite.

Add the W108/109 to my list of favorite classics. But there's just no way to have all the cars that one likes, even if money wasn't an issue. As for me, I spend a lot of time maintaining my vehicles and making up for the neglect of previous owners and even 3 cars might prove to be too much. I'll see. I think it's safe to say 3 is my limit.

I'm hoping that eventually I'll have caught up on anything and everything that should of been done on the 84 (owned for 1yr, I can see the light at the end of tunnel!), it will be so nice that maybe I'll go out and buy something else. (w124?!?) My talon takes almost zero maintenance anymore (3yrs), I just change the oil from time to time and it is good. That is how it should be! IMO, three is to many, two is still practical. I definetly know that two 'new' cars at the same time get old real quick!

Well, I need to be admitted to the asylum. I have the following:

1959 190Db (to be restored)
1976 240D (dead, and likely to be parted out)
1980 240D (in the process of being parted out)
1984 Euro 240D (you'll have to pry my cold dead hands from this one)
1999 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins Turbodiesel (You'll have to kill me for this one as well)
2000 Daewoo Lanos SX (yup, a gasser, but a good cheap disposable commuter)
2003 Saturn VUE (will likely be traded for a Jeep Liberty diesel when they are on the market)

I am also storing my brothers 2000 Daewoo Lanos while he is in Iraq.

I guess it depends on what you call cool. I recently had a Rhino Liner sprayed in and had the windows tinted. I installed a CB radio not long after I bought the truck as well as aftermarket AM/FM/CD player and speakers. It had a black plastic tool box untill the hinges finally gave up the ghost. As the CB antenna was mounted to it, the CB is currently inop. I want to find another black one as I don't particularly care for the chrome ones. I bought a solar panel trickle charger for the batteries during periods of sitting. I haven't done anything to the engine other than run biodiesel through it. It's a tow and farm truck so to speak, and it gets treated like one. It currently has 97,500 miles on the odometer. With all of the vehicles, it's use has become more specialized, and it's now not uncommon for it to sit for a month or more between uses.

Sounds pretty nice, but I bet a Scotty II and an EZ Edge would make it sound even better. I bet that would make for an easy WVO conversion. I don't really care for the chrome look that much on those boxes, but they must have insane range if the tool box also holds fuel. Some do only that, those are HUGE! Does it ride pretty fair? Eventually I'll stop in to one of the chrysler dealerships in the area and take one out for a test drive. The only problem will be, I'll probably want one even worse! Any complaints?

Yup, a WVO conversion would be very easy. There are taps on the engine to add additional heater hose lines that could be tapped for tank heating. My truck ride is typical of a 3/4 ton truck, a bit rough, but not so much so that I am uncomfortable on a long trip. Smooth roads are smooth rides. As for the new style, I haven't driven one yet to compare. As for quality of the truck, it remains the single best domestic vehicle I've ever owned. My only replacement thus far has been an A/C compressor. I'm even still on the OEM tires and brakes. I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to recommend buying one. I only tell people to keep them simple. As is typical with domestic iron, the more goodies you add, the more likely you are going to have one of those frustrating unsolvable issues that the stealership is unwilling to admit exists. My truck is the example of simplicity. Rubber floors, plastic doors, manual windows, locks, and tranny. My only "options" were cruise control (came with tilt wheel), camper package, cloth seat, and A/C.

My truck in itself is an investment. I bought this thing with the intention of it being the last truck I ever buy. I have an engine capable of running a million miles with proper care, and the rest of the truck is simple enough to go the distance as well. Most of the people that I know that have similar gasser trucks are now looking at buying their replacements. I haven't hardly scratched the surface of this trucks lifespan.

I knew they left a fitting there for either the fuel or for the vent to the aux. fuel tank but didn't know they did that too. I would imagine that would be brutal here though, I swear my state is blessed with the worst roads in the country. Then again those huge tires (I'd get some 315s) would be like a track going over a pothole. Ideally I'd like a 98.5 quad cab CTD 6spd HO 4x4. Those 6spds almost seem rare, most are autos, but it seems most manuals are 5spd. I'd like a manual partially because the autos in those are expensive to replace, partially because if I got one I'd probably 'bomb' it.

Yea yours is still like brand new. One truck was featured on cummin's site because it crossed the 1M mile mark, guy hauled trailers or something. I wouldn't even want to put the fuel in a gasser (not just because gas stinks ), nor live with its bad longivity. There is a guy on one of the forums with a 'bombed' 1 ton CTD who claims he legally pulls loads upto 34k#gvrw!!! He hauls a 53' car hauler around from state to state with this 1 ton CTD. Myself I know the motor has enough to pull it, and the frame enough to handle it, but the pure phsysics of the brakes just doesn't make sense. A 6k# truck simply can't pull 34k# safely! (btw, it is factory rated around 15k#)
