Long post- I may have missed it, but- have you checked your turbo? Engine oil may be leaking past the seals.
Sorry if this has already been cussed/discussed. Joe |

Jeff, I've been thinking a little more about this enigma. Here's a few thoughts:
1) A new timing chain reduced "stretch" from 5.5* down to 4*, instead of zero. That, to me, sounds like worn sprockets on the cam and/or crank. Although I really don't think this is the cause of you problems, if it were my car I'd look at the cam sprocket closely and replace it if there are signs of wear. On my engine a new chain took the readings from 4* back to 0*. If you haven't installed the offset key it wouldn't hurt but 4* cam timing won't make a hill of beans of difference - BT, DT. 2) The problem could be a damaged prechamber, but that's not too likely, and you'd need to pull them out to inspect which requires special tools (pin wrench, slide hammer, & adapter). I'd skip that for now but it's another (admittedly remote) possibility. If the engine was ever fed ether (starting fluid) though, this possibility moves WAY up the list. ![]() 3) Question: IS your ALDA a virgin? Does it still have the little sealed coffee can on top? If not, and you can see the locknut & setscrew, did YOU adjust it in the past or did someone else? ![]() |

Sorry it took so long to reply, my computer isn't working.
1- Yeah, I sort of had a feeling this was true but figured since it is stabbing in the dark anyway may just as well get the woodruff keys. 2- I've never used starting fluid, I seriously doubt anyone else did either. The day I picked the car up the car had a dead battery and the guy wasn't smart enough to know there was a block heater so he just kept turning and turning the motor (cold, dead battery, and flooded) until it started, at least he didn't try ether. 3- It was, back when the car first felt laggy I was going to take the suggestion of adjusting the ALDA to help the off the line performance, however I never adjusted it so the cap is just off. I ended up replacing the timing chain right after popping the cap off, but no adjustments were ever done....

"Smoking, carboning, poor cold off idle with little to no blowby. What could it be?"
Are you sure you don't have an OM615 in there?

Well the off idle phenomnen only happens when the motor is cold, when warm it isn't that bad anymore. Up until I retimed the IP it was laggy there even warm, but not anymore. The motor warm has as much power as I'd expect from the OM617, while the 1-2 isn't hard it'll put a little rubber down if gunned. I do suppose I should call around today to get that one way valve for the compression tester so I can at least make some ground on it soon.
My MityVac makes pressure but the gauge doesn't tell me how much pressure it is making. Ok I'll put testing that between getting the injectors tested and installing the woodruff key. Things around here should be slowing down soon, plus the weather is going to be much warmer so I hope to have plenty of time to work on it through this week! I miss my benz! ![]()

My 83 is smoking worse than ever and starts nailing when the RPMs are first ran up when cold. I have a new set of Bosch nozzles waiting on the shelf, just need to get the POP tester built up.
