an object graphic lesson

My only excuse for posting this junk Jaguar here is as an object graphic lesson.
If you do not understand what you are doing; do not touch it.

The previous owner was a young man.
He decided to DIY change the head gasket; to save money.
The following pictures show what happened.

What did he do (or not do) that caused all that carnage?

Hello ehmand
He set the cam timing wrong and junked the engine.

Always turn an engine by hand after any timing components are R&R. Thus will show any interferences before anything is damaged.

Why is it junk? My grandparents had one of those, other than needing a valve job at like 60k miles it seemed to be a good car. It was nicer than there 86' but no match for the XJ8.

the car body is OK but

the engine is junked.
The young man who did this damage kept cranking until the battery was dead, recharged battery, and repeated the process at least fifteen minutes total.
The oil pump is seized with metal fragments.
The crank shaft makes a grinding sound as you turn it with a ratchet, and it binds with cylinder #4 at TDC.
Two valves are naked eye visibly bent.
The head has a naked eye visible warp from end to end.
The cam lobes are coated with heavy pitting rust.

Open hood, insert tuned port injected LT-1 from a dead corvette.

Car suddenly becomes something other than a pretty paper weight.

Seriously, it's amazing what some people do to motors, it's as if there are no books to be read or advice to be sought. I put a timing chain on my 78 Honda Z50 when I was eight years old, adjusted the valves, and had many years of service from it, this stuff isnt that complicated, people are just ignorant.

Is this correct? Are you a child prodigy? I did take my own training wheels off. But I don't like to brag.

Hah hah! Me too! My mom loves to tell that story.

As a kid I was great at taking stuff apart. Not so hot at putting it back together, though.
