Do you suppose that Alternator would fit on a 78 M117 engine?

The 115 amp version should swap in like other people in the thread are describing... The bigger 130 amp one like I used will need a little more work.

90A Bosch AL115x?

Does anybody know if this will fit into a 617 or have tried "semi-upgrading" into 90A AL115x instead of the 115A AL129x to an '85 617 with W123? The reason I'm asking is I am planning on ditching my 65A AL117x pretty soon as it's showing signs of saying goodbye already, but I'm a bit hesitant and intimidated with the big fat beefy AL129x that it will not clear the high pressure AC line, hence I'm leaning more toward the smaller AL115x, which is 10A better than the 80A upgrade. Thanks in advance for the help!

I have the AL-129-X in my 85 300D. It is a tight fit, and does not rub, but
putting it in, I sure didn`t think it would clear the hose going to the aux
water pump. clears, but close.

I don`t have my AC in right now, so no problem.

Iam not going back through this intire thread, but I remember someone
saying, to clock the 2 halves of the case to clear the AC. remove the 4
bolts that hold the case together, and rotate to the next hole, and bolt it
back together.

I then made a new wire harness for the increased amperage.

Well, I'm not going to spend that much money just to find out I have to do major modification. I'd rather get a used one to mock up then go from there.

Which types of vehicles were these alternators equipped?

I know Saabs but there aren't ANY Saabs around here.
Would 6.9 alternator parts afford more room?

Panzer, did you ever figure out anything with installing a larger alternator on the m117? I'm curious about the m116 which I believe shares similar bracketry and alternator

Move the harness on the alternator to clear the AC hose.

Before you install the alternator move the back plate 180 degrees before you put it in. Be careful when you separate the backing plate from the stator because the wires are attached to the diode board. You are really just moving the mounting ears 180 but the affect is the same. The mounting studs for the electrical hookups are now outboard of the engine where they were before. Problem solved. Another hint when mounting. Leave the top bolt out when mounting the belts. Once you get the belts on then put the bolt through the bracket and mount to the engine mount. Oh, do not use the adjusting bracket that has the stamped rectangular hole in it. It will hit the heater hose fitting that comes out of the water pump.
Have fun.

Another successful upgrade!

Thanks for all the great advice in this post! I purchased and installed a 150 Amp AL129X alternator that I found on Ebay. There is a seller making specific kits for upgrading 617 alternators. Worked great, it came with instructions and great support.

I definitely recommend this upgrade!

Do you have a link to the ebay listing?

I just finished installing a 115X in an 87D, and after sorting all the wiring issues out, got 14.3volts at idle with everything on. lights, radio, a/c, blower and the wipers... freaking awesome.

That alternator is not rated 150A originally, right? I thought the AL129X was 115A, not 150A. Assuming it started life as a 115A unit... remember that high-amp rewinds put out more peak current, but less idle current. Just something to keep in mind. It may not be any worse at idle than the stock 50-70A units though. I personally wanted more idle current, not peak current, but YMMV, etc...

save your money for a good alternator.
