You must be mistaking biodiesel with WVO here. B100 is about as good for engine wear as you can get.

soy powered,

My refrence to bio-d was because I have not seen any studies on wvo and it's effect on engines. You are right in pointing out there are great differences between bio-d and WVO. My point was that you would have to tear up an engine pretty fast for free fuel to be as expensive as diesel. I haven't heard of anybody replacing an engine because of WVO.

I drive the Mercedes instead of the Econoline becuase of the fuel economy. If I wasn't paying for fuel, mileage wouldn't matter. Of course that little 2.4 is a lot easier to service, and used parts and engines are plentiful. When the 7.3 needed an IP it sat until I had the money for someone else to do it.

I could almost live on what my wife spends for diesel fuel. She burns about 10 - 15 gallons a day. Converting her Powerstroke is sounding better all the time.

IF I WASN'T PAYING FOR FUEL, MILEAGE WOULDN'T MATTER? What planet are you planning on moving to?

No offense, but some of you guys need to get educated about biodiesel. Brewed biodiesel, straight vegetable oil (SVO) and waste vegetable oil (WVO) all lubricate BETTER than dino diesel. It's well established that engines last LONGER on biodiesel than on dino diesel, all else being equal. They don't sludge up the engine, because they burn in the combustion chamber just like dino diesel. In fact, biodiesel acts as a solvent in the fuel system, cleaning out all the crud that's accumulated from using dino diesel (which is why you need to change fuel filters more often than usual after first switching to biodiesel).

Power is actually better on biodiesel than on dinodiesel, though mpg may suffer very slightly. Biodiesel also makes most diesel engines run smoother at at idle and under most other conditions. And it drastically lowers emissions.

A lot of people find that the 123 series M-B runs well on SVO without mods. Especially if you live in a warm climate and blend it with dino diesel. WVO can be used straight, also, if you first filter it through a 5-micron filter.

Hotskillet: If I were you, I'd take that supply of cooking oil you produce every day and use it to run my car. You'll save money at the pump and in your restaurant business.

From a financial standpoint, if I can get all the WVO I need from the local diner for free, I don't see if it matters if I get a little less MPG since it would cost the same for a gallon as ten gallons, zilch.

From a practical standpoint, a lower MPG just means I have to carry a more fuel.

My assumption that WVO get a little less mileage is from another post that suggests that there is some loss of power compared to dino-doo-doo.

Anybody have any experience refueling on the road with WVO? I think that all I would have to do is ask for oil at a local burger stand and filter it. A bucket with some hose fillings and a couple of filters should do the trick. How much filtering needs to be done with WVO and how does one go about it?

Diesel here this AM is $1.59. Regular unleaded $1.84 at one station, most others $1.89. Crude oil jumped $1.73 a barrel today. A recent article in San Antonio paper says prices are high due to refinery capacity shortage. Said since early 1980's we have lost half of our refineries due to EPA mandated upgrades. If we want cleaner air this is the price we are going to pay.
Also I have noticed few people are driving slower, this would save on fuel and drive prices down. Just my observation.

Much cheaper here in Michigan

Just drove a Marathon station here near my house and the
price for a gallon of diesel was $1.69. I've been noticing
diesel prices now that I just purchased a 1995 E300D.

Gas prices are about 45 cents more per gallon.

Here in LA diesel went down 20 cents in the last week, still $2.25.

It's amazing how fast you get used to those prices, only 6 weeks ago I could still fill up for $1.89 and now I think $2.25 is a good deal!?

$1.69 in MD as well. How do you like the e300d? 650+ miles on a tank what's not to like?

Oh course my savings will be diminished if my wife gets her way and buys a Land Rover Discovery. I can't talk her out of it, she just wants one. Too bad diesel discos are not available stateside.

Once our rebate form from the Maryland Soybean Board is turned in and returned this fall we will have been paying under $1.50/gallon this year for our B100.

Extremely high lubricity, 50 cetane, more biodegadable than sugar, less toxic than table salt, smells great, no terrorists or Big Oil involved, and less $ than the Devil`s Tea itself. It`s a no brainer. :p

turkey powered Mercedes?

Anybody catch Hal Lindsy this week? A story he ran refered to a May 2003 story in discovery Magazine about converting turkey guts to sweet Texas crude for $10 a barrel.

Discovery requires a subscription to read the full article, but there is a story on National Geographic website
