Creating a simple A/C system in my 300td???

Forgive me if this has been discussed i could not find anything when i searched.

Is it possible to bypass all the automated crud that is broken, and install a switch to activate the compressor and then turn on the defroster fan?

I assume it would be, unless the defroster fan is not the same one used for the A/C.

I already have the heater system rigged up so the hot fluid is on a manually opperated valve.

It looks like the only thing stopping me from having cold air is the automatic stuff ( and charging the A/C).

Any suggestions about what i would need to do.

thanks
Will

ACC bypass

Hey Will,
Attached is a drawing, {from a simpleton, mind you}, of the AC circuit on my '80 300TD. It is important to have a 30 amp fuse, and I was advised to use a 'maxi' fuse setup, which I did.
It appears that on my car there is also a valve that will shutoff the water to the heater core, but it looks like the knob for changing valve position is broken off. It is also right above the oil filter, which made changing the filter exrtremely difficult. I have quite some time before I have to start worrying about heat, though. What part of country are you in?
Jimmy

Dash toggles

Since this picture I have replaced both toggles with 30 amp rated toggle switches, wrapped them together with elect. tape, and tiewrapped them to hole in lower dash for kick panel screw. Also put ACC unit back in dash, did not plug in elect. connectors though. Just the lights and woodgrain. AC comes out of dash vents and defrost vents.

Fan wiring

Here is a pick of the fan wiring. Use at least 12 guage wiring, which I forgot to mention above. Now I need to find a way to vary the speed of the fan motor. It is either hi or off. Much quieter with passenger kick panel back on too.

Use maxi fuse, 30 amp, or....

Or this is what could happen. I noticed that the pic I posted of the wiring was before I had my meltdown {literally}, and before I installed the 30 amp maxi fuse.

WOW that was great reply thanks a bunch. Since my fan already comes on with the defrost buttom i can probably ignore the Maxi fuse issue? (yes, no ?). from the drawing it looks as if the fuse is not in line to the compressor.

I am in the north valley of California it was about 100 F today and will be getting hotter
thanks
will

You need to learn what your system has first..
Then make a list of what you think is " automated crud".
You need to keep devices which are in your system to protect the compressor ( the low pressure cutoff switch and the high temp cutout switch ) and you need to know what of the auto crud operated several systems at the same time... like the fresh air vent, temp control, freezing control, etc....
You can make a simple system but you don't want it ' more simple' than possible.... and you need to do some load research.... a meltdown is not allways as small and neat as what is shown in the picture.... could happen in a tight space, be worse, and start a fire...
I suggest you first get a paper copy of the Mercedes Heating and Climate Control manual... this is a book by itself... not part of another factory shop manual. Then you need a generic Auto Air conditioning manual... to know what you have and what is ' extra' and what is for safety.

what i meant by automated crud, was all the auto climate controls not the automtic saftey functions, i didnt know it was that complicated. but i am finding out after reading many many posts about A/C systems

A hero in the making..

I know for a fact that my brain pan will never be able to come up with a good simple safe and effective ACC/AC bypass circuit. With all the problems alot of us have with this, maybe someone could come up with "The" ACC bypass idea, and those of us that use it could send a little monetary love their way. I know the honor system isn't fullproof (or is that foolproof) but I sure wouldn't mind paying someone for their time and expertise. Only fair it seems. I just don't have the total automotive background that I believe this idea would require. I can repair and adjust and replace, etc.... I just don't have the skins to construct.
Good idea, bad idea, or just too much trouble?
Jimmy
