Oliver,

element is plunger&barrel inside the IP, one plunger-barrel assembly for each cylinder (on our in line IPs). The plunger is moved by the cam shaft of the IP and "pumps" fuel to the injector. Turning the plunger controls the delivered fuel quantity.
Do a search for "bosch highlights" for better explanation.

You ask what it takes to get some power out a 99 300E.... Everyone else here will tell you different. However, my answer to you is simple, and the exact same one I give everyone else who ever asks the same or similar questions....

Q.) How do I get more power out of a....(Insert model & year Mercedes)

A.) Small Block Chevy....!
