within the last 2-3 inches. I thought maybe it would improve with a new clutch.

My friction disk is nearly new and has the same problem. As Jetmugg said hes driven 2-3 of 190s like this. Does yours have the proper gasket at the slave cylinder? I am thinking about possibly doubling up on the gasket...

Yep, 3 of them, including the one I'm driving now. All have had the "high pedal" syndrome. It makes you think that the clutch is almost worn out, even though it may be brand new.

I agree that spacing the slave farther away from the trans housing seems like the best solution. I can picture about a 1/8" spacer, maybe whittled out of some aluminum sheet, might make a nice starting point.

I just planned on getting a few of the gaskets. The odd thing is that I have asked in all the popular 190 forums about this and no one seems to mind.

the reverse switch is physically in the auto and the on the manual it's on the shifter. Is that what you wanted?

Kind of. Is it the other 2 wires in the purple wire bundle that plugs into the automatic? I never did it on my W123 and it has irked me to this day...

Yes, hook the other two wires in that bundle (I forgot the colors) to the small switch located on the back left hand side of the manual shifter housing. That should give you working reverse lights.

In that bundle you have 4 wires. 2 big ones and 2 smaller. The big ones are the starter safety and the smaller ones are the reverse.... I could have that backwards. Anyway, the big ones go together and the same for the small ones. Make any sense?

The two big wires (purple I believe) are the Neutral Safety Switch wires. If you want to interlock the clutch pedal, I think you can hook the purple wires to the switch on the clutch pedal (check to see if it's normally open or normally closed).

The other two wires go to the reverse switch which is located on the 5-speed shifter housing.

I spent some time driving my BIL's 1993 300D 5-speed conversion yesterday. It has a 3.27 diff. I think the 3.27/3.29 is just about perfect for the overdrive tranny... 55mph is 2500rpm in 4th, 1900rpm in 5th. Top gear is basically unusable below about 55mph. I wouldn't want anything taller than a 3.27... the 3.07 would really be pushing it (perhaps more tolerable with a 603), and with 2.65 I'd expect it to be a complete dog (even with a 603). The 3.29 limited-slip you have should be ideal...a 190E-16 diff would also be great (those are 3.27 limited slip).

Good question. It should be in the 0.75-0.80 range but I'm not sure which exact tranny is in that car. If it's a 717.430, it will be a 0.79 ratio. I need to put it on the lift and check out the tranny number.

That is the big question. I am using the 190d transmission but it seems like most people use a 190e transmission. Mine is the 717.410 with an OD ratio of 0.84(perhaps 0.81 depending on build date).

So a good question is: How will this 3.29 diff and my 1 st gear ratio of 4.23 work? Granny gear? Think I could spin those tires at will?

EDIT

My gear ratios

717.410----------------4.23, 2.36, 1.49, 1.00, 0.84

I have the "diesel" trans (I assume this is the .410 model). Mine is in a '93 190E, with a 2.5TD engine and a 3.07 rearend, and 225/50/16 tires on the rear. First gear is a bit of a granny, with a pretty big step between 1st and 2nd when compared to the gasser transmissions. Depending on the situation, I start off in 2nd gear quite a bit, unless I have to come to a full and complete stop on level ground or uphill.

I can spin the tires in 1st if I really want to, but have only done it a couple of times, just to prove that I can. In moderate around town driving, shifting directly from 2nd to 4th is also quite practical due to the torque of the engine.

I actually think the gasser trannies are probably a better choice, with a slightly closer range of ratios. You can fine-tune the overall final drive by way of the rearend and, to a lesser extent, tire size. I have also daydreamed about the 2.3 16V transmission (close range 5-speed) with a taller rearend.
