Sev you seem to be totally uninterested in what anyone has to say, many many people have been trying to tell you that you CANNOT....REPEAT CANNOT make on of these cars super fast for cheap. So on your $1000 budget your only good option is to get your car tuned up and running great and enjoy.

if you've read the thread, you'll notice that i've learned that much already. and if i wan uninterested, i wouldn't go out of my way to reply to all the posts. ~$1000 was just a ballpark, just to see what could be done for that amount. this is really just a project car for me. i'll own it for a short period of time, i may just give it to my father because i know he likes these old cars (we used to own a gasser w114). in the meanwhile i will improve it as much as i can before i make the battle handoff to him

I dunno, you can do a lot with $1000 (not including maintenance) if you shop frugally. More fuel and more air == more go.

After reading those 0-60 times,

I think our first mods should be getting the car back to where they were when new, or perhaps "near new, but broken in". In the case of a 300SD, I can believe 14.5 ish 0-60 when brand new. Mine had 51k miles on it when I bought it, and was the fastest one I'd driven, which is why I picked it. With 1 person aboard, new air filter and clean injectors mid 12 second 0-60s were the norm. Speedometer was accurate. No GPS in those days, but there were 5 mile sections on Interstates you could use to test for accuracy - with a stop watch.

These tests were averaged in both directions, 300' above sea level, in cool moist air near Seattle. In hot dry air, we lost a few 10ths.

On the same stretch of road my 49hp Rabbit performed 0-60 in the high 14s. With 2 people aboard, more like 16.5.

Before making mods, my goal would be to get my car back to where it performed when new. I realize if your compression is low, your car is going to be slower, and most of us, including myself don't have an engine re-build in our budgets.

Even Motorweek managed 10.6 second 0-60 in the 300D 2.5.

Not sure which "You" you're referring to there Tyler. Though I may not have Lance's depth of knowledge, I like to think that I've learned enough in the last couple of years to contribute something around here. If nothing else I can handle a few of the redundant, repetitious questions that the more experienced guys are tired of answering (over and over) for the noobs.

And although I miss the answers he copuld provide, I don't miss FI's combative style. He always came across as the kind of guy who will give you a good answer, but only because he can do it in a way that makes you look or feel dumb - compared to him. I always wanted to meet him in person. I figure that as a kid he must have been one of those smart but geeky kids who ALWAYS had the answer in grade school. You know, the one who would make a big thing of pointing out that the answer given by the class bully was wrong - even though it meant he was going to get pounded on at recess by the bully - but somehow he just couldn't HELP it. He just HAD to make a big deal out of it and make the bully look dumb so he could look smart. Remember that kid? That is how I picture FI...

Dude, go ahead and Google it - thinking is good exercise for your brain and you'll learn a new word.

Take it easy on JimmyL, he's a pretty good guy (despite his trunk badge of truth and antique fan fetishes). He's been around a while and is a little grumpy sometimes, but basically a good guy.

Rather than carry something with the explosive power of acetylene, maybe try propane with a little NO2 instead?

Propane for extra fuel and NO2 for extra oxygen, just might work - for a little while anyway. And since they're both gasses, the two systems could share some of the same delivery components (one pressure switch to trigger both of them at the same time for example).

I think the European are doing some great stuff to their diesels. Larger IP's, more air, spending big bucks. Fast, Reliable, Cheap, Pick 2.
