Question Turbo Upgrade

Hello All;

I am planning to upgrade my turbo and add an intercooler plus other things to keep the car (1987 300D) safe with higher performance. Does anyone know what brand/size would be as close to plug-and-play (bolt on with no modification) for my car? Thanks in advance.

Ben

PS: the car is 124.133, engine 603.960 and transmission 722.317.

If you want some good reading while you wait for a reply, search VNT here and on the diesel forum, as well as other 603-related threads.

Also for your car, do you know which head casting you have (603 xxx YY zz where YY is the head casting number)? If it is a 14 (search "14 head") you should be cautious as it is known for failures between the combustion chamber and the water jacket, higher pressures and temperatures will put it more at risk.

Currently the simple mods are a 55-trim turbo and IP tuning, reputedly can give you a few more ponies (55-trim turbo has several sources including the SDL from '90 up). Be sure that you don't have the trap-ox on the car, that'll lose a couple of hp. The IP is expected to have another ~50hp in it with enough air and tuning, beyond that you're going to be looking into larger elements (search Myna).

Probably a VNT, turning up the pump, an aftercooler, and possibly exhaust will be a nice upgrade to near 200 crankshaft HP.

Thanks for the reply Jeff. I am planning to send my pump to Finland to be modified.

The holsets are a good fit, "Like it was designed to be there" according to he who must not be named. Unfortunately they dont make many VGT that are well suited for our cars. The HX(Y?)30 is a good fit but non VNT. The VNT's all require some way to control the vanes + adapters + various plumbing. I'm sure if you search around enough you'll uncover the plethora of information here and else where.

Question

I can't remember which forum, but I was told that many are taking turbo VNT from Dodge trucks and replace the electronic control with mechanical wasteagtes. I was told it the procedure was relatively easy. That's why I have my eyes on an HE351Ve. What do you think about this turbo?

They work very good. A friend of mine and I adapted one to fit his 2001 Dodge Cummins. I makes 37 PSI boost now in a matter of a few seconds. Very fast spooling compared to the stock fixed geometry HX-35. I am in the middle of putting one on my 99 as well.

After months of search I found a HE341Ve for my 1987 300D which will bolt right on to my European exhaust manifold. I don't think there is enough room with US-spec exhaust manifold. The controller for HE341Ve should be out soon as I have contact Fleece.
