It's a little late, but good to see Mercedes finally did the right thing.

Parts and Tools.....

First and most importantly, thanks to all of you pro mechs out there who kept us informed over these past couple of years and 30 pages worth of posts on the other thread.

After reading and skimming through those 30 pages, my guess is that we've not seen the last of this. I'm not certain the DC has nailed the design issues down on the dampner. Soooooo, if I choose to just do it myself on my 113 motor and again in the future because of what I mentioned earlier, I'll need the following (with the question dejour in parens):

112 589 00 40 00 superceded by 111 589 00 40 00 dampner counter hold (is this still available thorugh Phil in Fastlane?)

17mm allen head socket. Hello Snap-on (SAM17A)

113 589 00 40 00 fan pulley counter hold and
113 589 00 01 00 flat open end (thin) about 36mm to unscrew the viscous fan. (I think I've found decent aftermarket sets: http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/KD-3472.html or http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/LIS-42920.html Any thoughts on these for the shade tree mech).

Two large cheaters. I've got 2 4-5' pieces of pipe that I used when I changed out the front seal on a 110 motor. an equally demanding task

006 990 70 04 New Bolt (is this allen or hex head)

112 035 13 00 05 New dampner (is this the most recent/best part number)

Front seal (should I replace it while I'm there or leave well enough alone)

What else am I missing?

Cheers all

Does anyone know the official MB recall number? I haven't heard a thing about this recall yet in Australia.

READ! READ! READ! this isn't a RECALL but a MBUSA Service Campaign! ONLY a recall if the government mandates the repairs!

I called the 800 number to MBUSA customer (dis)service and after referencing the campaign number with the lady she said she was familiar with it but I'd need to work with my local MB dealer to get it taken care of. I called the service manager who told me that ONLY the Harmonic Balancer, Serpentine belt, and labor would be covered. I guess that all of the other expenses like a crank seal, front timing cover and top oil pan cover that got chewed up as a result of the breakage must not have been that important

I'm curious to know what kind of responses you other guys are getting from their dealers.

I had a look around work today but I can't find anything about it (in Australia). Maybe it'll come later or we won't get it at all
That number doesn't look like any recall/campain number we get in Australia.

(dis)service center info

I just tried calling the liars at the dis-service center myself. Lying ***** wouldn't even confirm OR deny that ANYTHING existed on the referenced issue. I remain standing beside myself how an organization can conduct themselves in such a manner.....
I called the local dealer from which the truck was purchased (I'm the 2nd owner)....set to have the thing done on Monday.

Which model did you have so that they send you the service campaign already? I called my dealer and they said the E-class is not out there yet, so far only CLS and SLK? (I believe)

Thanks,
Jeffrey

FYI:

The campaign covers the V8 engine too. My 2000 S430 is currently in the shop due to the campaign letter.

Instead of running to the dealer to get mine replaced immediately, I thought I'd wait for my letter to arrive.

Lo and behold, when I exited the freeway on the way to work this morning, while I was idleing at the bottom of the off-ramp, I actually felt my harmonic balancer break. My engine went from a smooth idle, to a shaking condition. It was real sudden. I lowered the window, and could hear a groaning noise, like one of the pulley bearings was going out.

I immediately thought of the harmonic balancer and shut the engine off.

I exited the vehicle, popped the hood, and looked down at the crankshaft pulley, and there was the rubber balancer. It had completely come off.

It is the size of a large doughnut, about 5 inches or so in diameter.

I had it towed to the dealer, and they immediately informed of the service campaign, and said they would take care of it.

Boy, do I feel I got lucky that it failed after I exited the freeway.
