After a couple of hours at Willow Springs Raceway, I have gone on the quest for a more neutral handling W124 wagon, by reducing understeer.
As with all things, suspension changes are like equations. A change ANYWHERE changes things everywhere. Currently I'm running H&R Springs front & rear for the 300TE; Bilstein Sport dampers front; SportLine front swaybar; and the stock self-levelling in the rear. The H&R springs are great for the track, but too low for the street IF you have aggressive spoilers (Brabus) like I do. The Bilstein Sport dampers combined with the H&R springs in the front ride like a BMW M3, and the SportLine front swaybar reduces lean considerably. However, with the stock rear swaybar, the balance has shifted to more understeer. For reference, here are some swaybar measurements I have gleaned from both personal experience and other enthusiasts. All measurements are in millimeters: 300E Stock (F/R): 26.7 / 15.0 Delta: 11.7 Slight Under 300TE Stock: 22.5 / 10.0 Delta: 12.5 Understeer SportLine: 27.5 / 17.0 Delta: 10.5 Neutral/Under Eibach: 28.0 / 17.0 Delta: 11.0 Slight Under 500E Stock: 27.5 / 15.0 Delta: 12.5 Understeer Delsing Motorsport: 31.75/ 22.2 Delta: 09.55 Neutral My Wagon: 27.5 / 10.0 Delta: 17.5 Heavy Under My goal is to get to a delta between 9.55 and 10.5, with the Sportline front swaybar. Now if I can only find a 17-18mm rear swaybar that fits the self-levelling suspension of the 300TE/500E . . . |
