ML55 Won't Crank Over...

After dealing with a minor battery issue in my ML55 last week, I thought my starting problems were at an end, Until today. Since the battery was replaced it's been starting flawlessly. I drove it to my shop today and it sat for about 5 hours. When I attempted to start it, it cranked maybe one quarter of a revolution then nothing...

I figured the battery was dead again from something draining it but i checked it and it was at 12.7V. I then tried jump starting it and still no go. What's weird is that the solenoid is making no engaging clunk at all. Absolutely no sound from the starter, however, every other electrical system is working fine.

I'd find it hard to believe the starter just "burned out" but I guess it could happen. The starter seemed to work flawlessly up to this afternoon. Also, I did get under the vehicle and bang the starter with a hammer to see if that made it feel better, but no luck.....

Is there any thing else I should be checking before I just pull the starter?

Thanks!
Adam

The ground strap to the engine is a good thing to check. They can come loose or corrode at the connections and they can break, too. May as well recheck the battery connections, if you didn't clean them corrosion there can block sufficient current.

I had a similar issue last year...it was indeed the starter...the ground strap was corroded as well but just went ahead and changed the starter.

Okay, thanks for the input guys. My next move is to test the condition of the starter at the relay terminal. I'll have to test that in the AM and post my results. I'll also look into the grounding strap and see if it's making a good contact.

Did you try powering up the solenoid at the starter, from the main wire at the starter?

Well there's your problem...

Warning: you need a u-joint 11mm reverse torx and a 2' extension to get this out.

At least I found the problem.
Thanks Guys!

Yep, I said the same exact thing in regards to me non functioning window when I got my door panel and found a shredded gear.

Did the connection melt off or was it just a bad soldering job from the factory?

It seems to me the cable eroded from corrosion until it had a meltdown from drawing too much current. I was thinking about just fixing it but I opted to buy a rebuild just in case there is a deeper issue.

Sigh.... well, more starter problems.

So, I replaced the starter a couple months ago as seen in this thread... Worked great up until last week. It seemed to start (for lack of better words) doing the same thing. Either nothing but a click when I turn the key or it would enguage the starter and turn over the engine. Over the next day, the problem got worse until it finally left me stranded.

So.....

I replaced the starter 2 days ago under warranty. Put the new one in and it started just fine! Drove it for 2 days, no problems whatsoever.... Well.... it's back!!! Stranded again.... another starter on the way. This time it did something really weird. I went to start it and the bendix got stuck in the middle, right before the flywheel. The starter just kept spinning for 5 minutes not engaged with the flywheel. I didn't have any tools to pull the battery terminal but it eventually stopped. When it did, I tried cranking it one more time and this time I could hear the gear on the starter lightly tapping the teeth on the flywheel. After that attempt, nothing. Not even a sound from the solenoid...

My question is, am I getting a string of bad rebuilt Duralast starters from Autozone or is my ML somehow killing starters??? I know the starter is not staying engaged while the engine is running.

I would bet my money on poor rebuilds.

Is the starter supposed to spool down before the bendix pulls the gear back in? Never seen this before, but then again I've never really looked.
thanks!

Very common to go though a bunch of crappy autozone starters before getting a good one. They're not worth it.

Well, the new one is in. Hopefully 3 times a charm....

I went ahead and anti-seized the hell out of the ring gear while I was under there.

Next time it goes out, get your money back and purchase a rebuilt Bosch unit.
