Is 'Dance' music popular in the US?

Since a couple of years, 'dance' music is very popular around here. It's a sort techno/disco type of music that's usually performed by DJ's in large clubs and even stadiums with thousands of people usually in their 20s-30s. Goes on for hours until the early morning. There's even a Dutch guy called DJ Tiesto that's one of the superstars in this scene. Is this popular in the US aswell?

are you talking raves? those are hit and miss... more of them in bigger locations...

the "dance" music around here is more what i'd call "pop," some rap, soul like stuff.. djs are becoming a staple on the "music"/dance scene..

you'll find a lot of 'dance' music variations started in clubs in the US. In terms of popularity, 'dance' is not as popular in the US as it is in Europe. Rock, Hip-Hop/R&B (with blacks/latinos + young whites), country and pop are most popular.
Music tends to be put in 'compartments' in the states- I blame the media (generally bland and narrow-minded agendas)- i.e you'll rarely hear a radio station play a rock track followed by a rap track (unless it's a white group).

Somewhere in the USA you'll find somebody who does something. No matter how strange. Concerning dancing, we have some religions that absolutely forbid it (know why Baptists don't make love standing-up? They're afraid somebody will think they're dancing) to clubs, concerts and raves that continue til dawn.

I went to the Delta Blues Festival (Greenville, MS) one year. The night before I was hanging around with some of the local promoters and about 1:30AM we went to a local club, all African-American except our group, a handful of white faces. It felt for a time like that scene in "Animal House." You know the one. But after a while the hubbub returned and we ordered some beers. Music started-up and it was, "Achy-Breaky Heart." Everybody got-up ('cept the white folks) to line dance.

We had entered another dimension. I didn't know the rules and I was frozen in my chair.

If you are talking about the "Techno" thats popular in Europe then the answer is no....the stuff played at raves and stuff here is a different type of music.

We have great clubs in Chicago that have dance type music. The pace and mood of the music changes as you go from club to club. These are completely different from a rave. There is a popular DJ in Chicago named Naughty Boy Nardi.

Dance clubs do exist in the US, but in smaller numbers. The ones I've been to in Europe are far more superior (especially in Berlin ) than the one's I've been to in the US. As someone said.. they're mostly in the larger cities. NYC, LA, Miami, etc would have them.

Also, I am assuming you mean "House music" party, and not techno when you reffer to dance. DJ Tiesto is not that known in the US, but others such as Scooter, Oakenfold and ATB are since they've been on MTV here once in a while.

Theres a station or 2 in the LA area that play all kinds of dance music, but late at night, when i used to listen to it, it turned to rap... But its not real popular here, and what of it is, gets grouped into pop, like britney spears(some of it actually isnt just lame pop), kylie minogue, ace of base-when they were around, and a bunch of basically one hit artists, even madonna occasionally. And the real good stuff rarely gets played. Just about every store, restaurant and of course club in most of los angeles plays dance music all day and night, kinda cool i think, cause I like it all. My friends have to like it too since I'm always the driver

Have you been to a European dance club to see what they play vs what they play here? House/party music is not the same as Techno....even though they may be distant cousins. I have over the years in Italy...as I usually go with my sister-in-law. Now if there is a difference in Northern European vs southern European I wouldn't know.

DJ Tiesto, Oakenfold, Digweed, Sasha, Paul Van Dyck and ATB are popular in the US, but its sort of a minority taste. "Trance" is also popular in some circles, and music like what Boards of Canada does. I can't imagine a dance club in the middle of a rural area, but there are decent places in larger cities. I live in Kansas City and there is at least one place you could go to for that.

Its interesting how Europe and a lot of the world enjoys this kind of music. It just isn't "mainstream" in the US really.

In short no. The closest we get are Mitsibushi commercials.

Many parts of the country are overtaken by rap/R&B, pimp worship, thuggin, and glorification of general lewdness and stupidity.

First let me say that my favorite type of music is melodic trance (which is really what much of what the "house music" or techno is in Europe. I played violin for quite a while and I do like classical but to me trance/techno is better/an improvement. Listening to long sequences of music with well done segues between tracks is much more enjoyeable to me than the standard 3:20. It is an entirely modern type of music that is only possible (easily) due to computers. DJ Tiesto is having a concert in LA, DC, and a few other places. I plan to be at the DC concert.

I suggest:
Armin Van Buuren (A state of trance)
DJ Tiesto
Oakenfold
ATB
BT
Orbital
Sasha and Digweed

and a million other one hit wonders

here are a few that I like and have been listening to recently:

A State of Trance ep. 188 (radio show) (Armin Van Buuren)
Universal Religion Live in Ibiza 2004 (Armin Van Buuren)
When the rush comes - Motorcyle (Armin Van Buuren mix)
Beautiful things - Andain (Tiesto or Photon or Gabriel and Dreseden mix)
Running on empty - Diana Fox
When the world ends - Dave Matthews Band (Oakenfold mix)
Smooth - IIo (Vinil Airbase Rmx)
Newborn - Muse (Oakenfold Remix)

laurencekarl,

I like your list. Interesting that I played violin as well. Its odd, though. I have old friends that are "muso's" and they all hate techno/whatever you want to call it. They think its simple and base. I totally disagree. They have theory and composition backgrounds, and seem to think it takes no skill to put together decent sounds when it somes to this kind of music and that it has nothing to say. Yet, they love Boards of Canada and others of their kind. I don't think there is any difference between them, as if they had an entire different genre to themselves apart form other electronic music. I'm always arguing for the value of this kind of music to people with musical backgrounds who think its all about Mistu ads and whatever and not buttoning the top three buttons of your shirt. Very frustrating. You can go back to performers like Greater than one (>1) to find cool samples and sounds, it all comes from a similar place I think. Even Eisternze Neubauten (sp?).

At the very least you can plow through some serious miles if you have to make a road trip.

Oh well.
